When it comes to lightning strikes, we all think of direct strikes from the sky to a dwelling. Less than 3% of strikes are direct. The majority of strikes are indirect and ground current. These occur when lightning strikes the ground near a site. The current will pass from the strike location through the ground and into the building.
Energy from indirect strikes enters the home through service wires such as cable, power, telephone, satellite, etc. Surges often travel through the electrical panel to your electronics. An indirect strike is usually less damaging than a direct strike initially. However, severe damage can occur when electronics are not properly grounded, and surge protection is not properly applied. Over time, the cost of repairs and replacements can become very frustrating and very expensive.
Proper use of TPD protection at the panel and all entry/exit points for your services will significantly reduce the chance of your electronics being disrupted or damaged.
