What’s Happening With Gutters in Extreme Cold
With temperatures this low, it’s very common to see some unusual (and frustrating) gutter behavior. Here’s what many homeowners are experiencing right now:
❄️ Ice buildup in gutters
Snow on your roof may melt slightly from attic heat, then refreeze as soon as it hits your metal gutters. Because metal gets extremely cold, ice can build up quickly.
💧 Water running over the gutters
As ice blocks the normal flow, melting snow has nowhere to go, so it can run over the front of the gutter instead of through the downspouts. This can look alarming, but in many cases, it’s simply a result of the extreme weather.
What You Can (and Shouldn’t) Do
✔️ Best practice: rake your roofline
If it’s safe to do so, keeping about 3 feet of roofline above the gutter clear of snow can help reduce ice buildup and allow meltwater to drain more properly.
❌ Avoid chipping or breaking ice out of gutters
We know it’s tempting — but trying to remove ice can actually damage your gutters, brackets, and fasteners. Frozen metal is more brittle, and prying ice can bend or break components. In most cases, the safest option is to let it melt naturally when temperatures rise.
