Your sump pump is only one piece of the system.

When water finds its way into your basement, the problem may have started long before it ever reached the sump pit.

Think about the entire path:

ROOF → GUTTERS → DOWNSPOUTS → FOUNDATION → DRAINAGE → SUMP PIT → DISCHARGE

If one part of that system is working against the others, your sump pump may be forced to handle far more water than it was designed for.

That’s why at Sump Guard Services, we look beyond the pump itself.

Our 25-Point Sump Pump System Assessment is designed to identify potential problems throughout the system — from the pit and pump to discharge, electrical components, drainage conditions, and other factors that can affect basement protection.

Because protecting your basement isn’t just about having a sump pump.

It’s about understanding the entire water-management system around your home.

Know your system. Find the weak points. Fix them before the next storm.

Heavy rain is on the way, and a few minutes of preparation today could save you thousands in water damage tomorrow.

Many basement floods aren’t caused by the storm itself—they happen because a sump pump wasn’t tested, a discharge line was blocked, or a backup system wasn’t ready when it was needed most.

Before the rain starts:

• Test your sump pump by pouring water into the pit.
• Check that your battery backup is charged and operational.
• Inspect your discharge line to make sure water can flow freely away from your home.
• Clear leaves and debris from nearby drains and window wells.
• Pay attention to unusual noises or warning signs from your system.

A sump pump is something most homeowners never think about… until it doesn’t work.

At Sump Guard Services, our goal is to help homeowners prevent flooding before it happens. Our comprehensive 25-point sump system inspection is designed to identify problems before they become expensive emergencies.

Don’t wait until you’re standing in water.

Storms like the one moving into our area can drop a lot of rain in a very short amount of time. When that happens, your sump pump becomes one of the hardest-working systems in your home.

Take 5 minutes before the rain starts to check these items:

• Test your sump pump by pouring water into the pit.
• Make sure the discharge line is clear and water can flow away from your foundation.
• Check that your float switch moves freely and isn’t obstructed.
• If you have a battery backup, verify it’s charged and ready.
• Remove leaves and debris from nearby drains and window wells.

A simple inspection today can help prevent thousands of dollars in water damage tonight.

If something doesn’t seem right—or if you’d like peace of mind before the storm arrives—Sump Guard Services is available to inspect, repair, and upgrade residential sump pump systems throughout Union County and the surrounding areas.

Stay safe. Stay dry. Be prepared.

A complete sump pump system is more than just a pump sitting in a pit. Every part has a job, and if one component fails, your basement could be at risk.

Here’s what each part does:

• Primary Pump – Removes groundwater during normal operation.
• Backup Pump – Takes over if the primary pump fails or your power goes out.
• Battery & Charger – Keeps the backup pump ready for emergencies.
• Float Switches – Detect rising water and tell the pumps when to turn on and off.
• Check Valve – Prevents discharged water from flowing back into the sump pit.
• Discharge Pipe – Carries water safely away from your home’s foundation.
• Sump Basin – Collects groundwater before it’s pumped away.

Many homeowners don’t realize their backup system has stopped working until the next major storm—and by then, it’s too late.

At Sump Guard Services, we inspect every component of your sump system, not just the pump itself. Our comprehensive inspection helps identify potential problems before they become flooded basements.

A functioning sump system isn’t a luxury—it’s your home’s first line of defense against water damage.

Schedule your annual sump system inspection before the next heavy rain.

This week I was inspecting a sump pump located in a crawl space. As part of our SGS 25-Point Sump System Assessment, I performed a manual float switch test.

By carefully lifting the float, I simulated rising water inside the sump pit. The pump immediately activated and discharged the water just as it was designed to do.

That’s exactly the response you want to see.

The float switch is what tells your sump pump when to turn on. If it becomes stuck or fails, your pump may never activate during a heavy rain—putting your home at risk for water damage.

One thing I thought was really neat about this home was the clean crawl space with a v***r barrier. Keeping moisture under control below your home, combined with a properly functioning sump pump, helps protect your home’s foundation and improve the overall condition of the crawl space.

A float switch test only takes a few seconds, but it can make all the difference when the next storm rolls through.

One of 25 checkpoints. One more home protected.

Your sump pump is part of a system—not just a single piece of equipment.

At SGS, our 25-Point Sump System Diagnosis is designed to evaluate the entire system to help identify potential issues before they become expensive repairs or water damage.

During our diagnosis, we inspect critical components such as:
• Pump operation
• Check valve performance
• Discharge line configuration
• Electrical supply
• Float operation
• Pit condition
• Pipe support
• And much more.

Our goal is simple: provide homeowners with a clear understanding of their sump pump system and recommendations to improve its reliability before the next storm.

Schedule your SGS 25-Point Sump System Diagnosis today.
