Smaller projects are welcome too

Not every job we do has to be an entire kitchen.

Sometimes a homeowner just wants the island changed.

Sometimes it’s only the lower cabinets.

We also refinish bathroom vanities, built ins and other painted cabinetry.

I actually enjoy some of these smaller projects because one change can add just enough contrast to make the whole room feel different.

You don’t always have to change everything to make a noticeable difference.

Friday is usually my favorite day on a kitchen.

Not because the week is over.

Well, maybe a little.

It’s because Friday is when everything finally comes back together.

Doors and drawers go back on. New hardware gets installed. Touch ups get finished. Tape and coverings disappear.

Then we finally get to stand back and see the kitchen the way the homeowner sees it.

After spending the week looking at individual doors, drawers and cabinet boxes, seeing the whole thing finished never really gets old.

Why prep matters

If there’s one part of cabinet painting homeowners should never overlook, it’s the prep.

Kitchen cabinets deal with grease, cooking oils, fingerprints, cleaners and years of everyday use.

You can put an expensive coating over a poorly prepared cabinet and still end up with a bad finish.

That’s why we spend so much time cleaning, degreasing, sanding and priming before the final color ever goes on.

The color gets all the attention in the after picture.

The boring stuff underneath is what makes it work.

’ve really started liking some of the two tone kitchens we’ve been doing.

Keeping the perimeter cabinets light and putting a darker color on the island gives you some contrast without making the entire kitchen feel dark.

Navy, deep blue, green and darker neutral colors can all work really well on an island.

You still get that bright, open feeling from the lighter cabinets, but the island gets to be the focal point.

Sometimes one different color is all a kitchen needs.

White is still one of the most common colors our customers choose, and I understand why.

It can make a darker kitchen feel brighter, works with almost any countertop and gives homeowners a lot more freedom when they change flooring, backsplash or decor later.

But there are a LOT of whites.

Snowbound, Alabaster and other off whites can look completely different depending on the lighting and the other colors in the kitchen.

We always recommend looking at the color in your actual kitchen before making the final decision.

Paint chips have fooled enough innocent homeowners already.

Finished up another kitchen in Cary, NC this week, and I really like how this one came together.

The before and after is a pretty big change. The original wood cabinets made the kitchen feel a lot darker, and simply changing the colors gave the whole space a different feel.

Client went with Sherwin-Williams Snowbound on the perimeter cabinets. It’s a soft white that brightened everything up without looking too stark.

For the island, we used Sherwin-Williams Indigo Batik. I really like this combination. The blue adds some personality and breaks up all the white while still keeping the kitchen looking clean and classic.

We also added new hardware throughout. It seems like a small detail, but once everything is finished, the hardware really pulls the whole look together.

We cleaned, sanded, prepped and primed everything before applying our 2K cabinet coating. The doors and drawer fronts were sprayed back at our shop while we worked on the cabinet boxes in the home.

It’s always fun getting to the end of the week and looking back at where we started.

I really like how this one turned out.

This was a smaller project for us in Garner, NC, but it shows that you don’t have to repaint your entire kitchen to make a noticeable change.

The client already had white cabinets and wanted to bring some color and contrast into the kitchen. Instead of changing everything, we refinished only the lower cabinets in Benjamin Moore Hale Navy and kept all of the uppers white.

Hale Navy is one of those colors that works really well for this. It’s a deep navy, but it doesn’t feel overly bright or trendy. With the white uppers, light countertops, stainless appliances, and dark backsplash, it completely changed the feel of this part of the kitchen.

And yes, you can absolutely have only part of your kitchen refinished.

We do plenty of smaller projects like lower cabinets, islands, bathroom vanities, built-ins, and other areas where you just want to add some color without committing to the entire kitchen.

Sometimes changing less actually makes the color stand out more.

Your cabinets aren’t ugly.

They’re just stuck in the wrong decade.

Before you spend thousands tearing out perfectly good cabinets, consider refinishing what you already have.

We can take dated oak, dark espresso, old glazed finishes, and tired painted cabinets and completely change the look of your kitchen.

Most kitchens are finished in just one week, Monday through Friday.

New look. Same cabinets. A whole lot less demolition.

A reminder for anyone planning a kitchen update...

New hardware can completely change the look of painted cabinets.

Sometimes swapping old k***s and pulls after refinishing makes the kitchen feel brand new without adding much to the budget.

It's one of the simplest upgrades with the biggest visual impact.

If you're thinking about replacing your cabinets, don't forget to look at refinishing first.

Many solid wood cabinets have decades of life left in them.

Sometimes they just need a fresh start.
