We will be taking a deeper look throughout the week on the inside and other cool fixtures we helped with (this includes a gorgeous chandelier, light dimmers, and more!!)

Born in my home state Ohio in 1856, and in his early teens took up a variety of jobs including railroad engineer and worker.

During 1876-1878 Woods lived in New York City learning about electricity and engineering, a subject that would not only change his life- but eventually the world.

Rolling in for the third week of Black History Month we have Marie Van Brittan Brown and Albert L. Brown! They created the home security system using CCTV- with added ability to alert police at the push of a button.

This was in response to the delayed arrival of the police when residents in their neighborhood would call.

Week two of Black History Month rolling in with James Edward Maceo West!
Born in 1931 it was noticed very quickly that James enjoyed taking things apart to figure out how they worked. At 8 years old he was electrocuted while plugging a broken radio into a ceiling outlet, which pushed him to continue learning more about electricity.

James’s mother Matilda was one of the human computers who became known as the “Hidden Figures”- went from teaching in a school to working at Langley Research Center while being an active officer in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Langley would later fire Matilda in response to her work with the NAACP which fueled James E. West’s determination to advocate for greater diversity in STEM fields.
