Backpacks are coming out of the closet.

Rich County kids head back Aug 19, Salt Lake City on Aug 18, Cache County on Aug 25 — and just like that, summer's over. Raspberry Days wrapped last weekend, the beaches at Bear Lake are thinning out, and the lake settles into that quiet stretch we all secretly love.

But here's the thing about the quiet season: it changes who's around. All summer, your cabin had family in it most weekends and neighbors two doors down. Come September, a lot of places at Garden City, Laketown, Fish Haven, and St. Charles go from busy to empty overnight. Same story down on the Wasatch Front — houses that were full all summer are empty from 8 to 5 once school starts.

That's not a reason to worry. It's just a good moment to check a couple of things: Are your cameras still aimed where you need them? Did that back door latch ever get fixed? Does anyone get an alert if the power drops at the cabin?

Summer is in full swing at Bear Lake — the beaches are packed, the boats are out, and Raspberry Days is right around the corner (Aug 6–8 in Garden City 🍇). It's the best few weeks of the year up here.

It's also the busiest. More visitors, more comings and goings, and a lot of cabins and homes sitting empty while everyone's out at the lake or in town for the festival.
