A little rain doesn’t always mean your lawn has gotten enough water.

A simple rain gauge takes the guesswork out of watering. Our goal is about 1 inch of water per week, including both rainfall and irrigation, ideally spread across 2–3 watering days.

Check your gauge after it rains, keep track of your total for the week, and use your irrigation system to make up the difference. If Mother Nature gives you the full inch, you can give the sprinklers a break.

Consistent, deep watering helps encourage stronger roots and a healthier lawn. A $5 rain gauge can tell you a whole lot more than looking out the window!

🌱 Lowcountry Turf Report | Issue #9

September is here, but the Lowcountry is still dealing with a very summer-like mix of heat, humidity, scattered storms, and uneven rainfall.

This week we’re watching:
🐞 Chinch Bugs: SEVERE in St. Augustine
🐛 Sod Webworms & Armyworms: HIGH as we move into peak season
🪰 Whiteflies: SEVERE on susceptible ornamentals
🍂 Gray Leaf Spot: MODERATE with warm, humid, wet conditions
🌱 Weeds: MODERATE and still actively growing

Rainfall remains highly variable from one neighborhood to the next, so the best move is to water based on what actually falls in your yard. Aim for about 1 inch of total water per week from rainfall and irrigation, and skip unnecessary watering after a good storm.

St. Augustine, Zoysia, Centipede, and Bermuda are all still actively growing, so proper mowing height, sharp blades, and consistent moisture remain important as we head deeper into September.

Fall w**d control starts before you ever see the w**ds.

Pre-emergent works by creating a barrier in the soil that prevents many w**d seedlings from successfully establishing. That’s why timing is so important. We want that protection in place before cooler temperatures trigger winter w**d germination.

For our fall pre-emergent treatments, we use a split application of Specticle FLO. Rather than relying on one application to carry the entire season, the split approach helps provide extended protection through the winter and into spring.

This is especially important for reducing troublesome winter and early-spring w**ds such as annual bluegrass (Poa annua), chickw**d, clover and other w**ds that can quickly take over a lawn while warm-season turf is dormant.

And remember, pre-emergent is preventative. It doesn’t wait for w**ds to appear and then kill them. The goal is to stop as many as possible before they ever become a problem.

Start this fall for a better spring.

We’re closing out August with more scattered storms, but the Lowcountry is still dealing with a major rainfall deficit and very uneven conditions from yard to yard.

This week we’re watching:
🌧️ Increasing thunderstorm chances with highly variable rainfall
☀️ Continued drought stress, especially across portions of South Carolina
🐞 Chinch Bugs: SEVERE in St. Augustine
🐛 Sod Webworms & Armyworms: HIGH as we move toward peak season
🪰 Whiteflies: SEVERE on susceptible ornamentals

The big lawn-care takeaway this week is simple: water based on what actually falls in your yard. If your property catches a good storm, skip unnecessary irrigation. If it misses the rain, keep aiming for about 1 inch of total water per week between rainfall and irrigation.
