As 2025 winds down, I would like to recognize Templeton Roofing celebrated its 95th anniversary under the Templeton name. Thank you Pat Weaver for recording this moment with pictures marking our 95th year. And, thank you to Hannah Baer of HB’s Bakery for the wonderful anniversary cake. Thank you to all of our customers and employees, past and present for your contribution to our success.

All of our customers are important to us. Occasionally, we get to work for customers that have a very special life story. This customer happens to be one. 102 year old Mr Leland Chandler and his son Alan chose Templeton Roofing after wind damaged the roof and siding at Leland’s house. Once starting work, we started chatting about how well Leland got around for being 102. Leland then shared that he was a Japanese POW for 3-1/2 years during WW2. He shared the brutality of the Japanese towards the prisoners. It’s beyond a miracle he survived that horrific ordeal.
After telling his story about his WW2 service, he shared he became a firefighter after the war, spending time in the Middle East, Chanute Air Force base, Quad City International AirPort and a short time on the Galesburg Fire Department. I asked Leland and Alan to tour the Brooks St. firehouse, and they came over in October and we took a group photo to remember the moment. It’s been a true honor gain the trust from Mr. Chandler and do work on Leland’s home.

Edit-I failed to mention that on the day Mr. Chandler was captured in the Phillipines, he was 1 of over 450 taken prisoner by the Japanese. By the time the war ended, he 1 of only 80 to survive as a prisoner of the Japanese. He weighed approximately 190lbs when he was captured and was 80 pounds when he was returned home. A truly remarkable story.

Flashback Friday. This is the business card for my step great grandfather Herman Willmering, who owned HH Willmering Roofing and Paint Company, which dates to late 1800’s-early 1900’s. My grandfather Clarence Templeton learned the roofing trade from his Step Father Herman.
In 1930, my grandfather opened up his own roofing company under the Templeton name. 4 generations and over 95/100 plus years later, we are still installing new and repairing commercial and residential roofs.
