This morning's coffee break included a walk down memory lane, as we celebrated Randy's 25th year with HSU. Here's an oldie, but goodie, of Lichtenstein's Brushstroke at the Hirshhorn in 2003. What an incredible journey it's been so far!

Len Dawson was a dedicated husband, doting father, and was well-respected by his colleagues here at HSU. He left this world too suddenly and too soon. Rest In Peace.

Leonard Dawson passed away on June 13, 2022 in Clinton, Maryland. Funeral Home Services for Leonard are being provided by Ross-Bluford Funeral Home.

People often ask if we do home renovations. Usually the answer is "no," but we we do for unique clients like these ladies. HSU is busy at work for the next year at the Lion and Tiger House renovating the entire exhibit supporting mechanical systems, and surrounding areas (think hardscape). The effort will all enhance the visitor experience as well as insure that the caregivers have state of the art resources. Can you tell how excited they are?

Hey sports junkies, here's some fun facts for you. The project at the US Naval Academy's Farragut, Dewey and Glenn Warner Fields included engineering lighting calculations and field measurements of grid spaces to assess light loss factors and the average illumination level. Why? To make sure that the basis of design was in accordance with NCAA and NAVY guidelines for luminance, spill, color temperature and uniformity for televised broadcast, i.e., ESPN! It gives a whole new perspective to playing under the lights. Kudos to the project management team for finishing the work 4 months early, even with major contract modifications and working around all those osprey nests!

HSU Builders

Founded in 1994, HSU has grown and flourished in Montgomery County, Maryland, starting out from a spare bedroom in Chevy Chase, and then Bethesda. HSU took its first "real" office space in the basement of a meat business/day-trading firm in Kensington and later moved to Rockville (twice). Home has been Gaithersburg since 2015. The stories from the past 28 years are entertaining and endless, however, we owe our success and longevity to an amazing team of leaders, project managers, administrators, subcontractors and all of the families that support them. Thank you - the future is bright.

TGIF everyone! No, it was last Wednesday that we resumed our pre-COVID tradition of gathering for education and camaraderie at the HSU parking lot. Speaker Chris Caruso shared heavily redacted stories from a lengthy career with the US Secret Service. We also celebrated the retirement of Mr. Johnnie Shaffer's illustrious 40+ years in the industry. Great to see you all!

Congratulations! The Holton-Arms Lower School Renovation has received the AGC award for the Education category - to be celebrated this fall at the 2021 Washington Contractor Awards event. In overcoming innumerable design obstacles and unforeseen conditions, the project team was able to build out the 40,000 sf space in less than 60 days over summer break 2018 - much to the delight of its LS students and teachers. Great job!

HSU is excited to announce another new project honoring our nation's soldiers - "Completing the Circle" - the final phase of the National Museum of the Marine Corps. This project will aid in sharing the story of the Marine Corps history from 1976 up to the recent Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Project completion date - Memorial Day 2021.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps, opened in November 2006, is the bold new building visible from I-95. Atop the museum is a huge asymmetrical cone of glass and steel, gathered around a “spear”—a stainless steel mast 210 feet long, angled at sixty degrees, referencing the flag raised at Iwo Jima. (One of our projects from 15 years ago.) The architecture suggests strength, bold assertion, and originality; it captures in concrete, stainless steel, and glass the spirit of the Marine Corps. Ooh Rah!

June 19, 2020

When I started out in construction, I was the first black apprentice and the only one at the time. I was twenty years old and still had two of my four-year carpenter's apprenticeship left. I became a journeyman carpenter and then moved up to the position of carpenter foreman, which made me the first black carpenter foreman in the company’s history. This was a great and honored position for me that I will never forget, especially for those times because most blacks working in the construction trade in the early 1980s were laborers or concrete workers, but rarely, carpenter foremen. I thought at that time that I had reached the ceiling of my career, only to find out that there was no ceiling at my company, which was the Ronald Hsu Construction Company in Lanham, Maryland.

So when that company closed, I was blessed enough to get a position at HSU Builders, working with the second generation of the Hsu family. I've found that diversity is still thriving at an all time high because even in my second generation of employment (I joined when we were a small group) to grow and be awarded the position of General Superintendent over all of the field staff for the whole company, which made me the first black General Superintendent in the DC area. This position was certainly a great honor that I held until my semi-retirement.

The thing that I find the greatest joy in is knowing that if my life's circumstances permitted, I could have gone as far as I desired to. This speaks volumes about the character of the company’s history, as it relates to racial diversity.

And as I look at my son LaMont D. and his position at HSU Builders, I see that the trend setting has continued, and was well in place even before it was popular to do so, because from a laborer on my sites, he has moved into positions such as, Safety Officer, QC Officer and Superintendent based upon an opportunity from HSU and a desire and ability from him.

I certainly salute the HSU Builders family for both seeing and also appreciating all of the beautiful colors in the rainbow and then selecting all of them to model your company after, showing that diversity is not a weakness but a strength that exposes all of us, to the best in us.

During this COVID19 period, we have been staggering office work shifts to support our active jobsites. We've witnessed the team spirit come out in many forms through virtual daily huddles, meetings, and lunches. Last week, we hosted a baby shower for Kyle & Audrey who will become parents for the first time next month. More than a dozen people joined for a happy hour to "see" each other, laugh and toast the soon-to-be parents.
