Ever wonder what to do with Pumpkins after Halloween? Here are some ideas!

•Compost – if you have a backyard composting system or are fortunate enough to have a compost service, scrape the candle wax out of the pumpkin, break the pumpkin up, and put it in your compost bin.

•Take it to a Farm or CSA – if you know a local farmer or CSA owner, they might be interested in taking that pumpkin off your hands and feeding it to their farm animals

•Make a bird feeder – scrape out the candle wax, add in some birdseed and sunflower seeds. You can either hang it up or put it on a plant stand in your garden or yard.

•Science experiment – scrape out the candle wax and use the pumpkin for a science experiment. Put in some baking soda and add vinegar and watch the foamy explosion. You could also add a bit of food coloring to make it funnier. Kids will love this.

•Make a face mask – pumpkin is loaded with all kinds of good vitamins and minerals for your skin. Vitamins A, C, and E as well as minerals like zinc, copper, magnesium, manganese, iron, and potassium. These will help to promote collagen production, protect from free radical damage, improve cell turnover, help reverse UV sun damage, fight acne, improve circulation, improve skin texture, and much more.

•Stock – don’t throw away the stringy goop! After you remove the seeds, throw the goop into a pot filled with water, add those vegetable scraps that you’ve got stored in your freezer, boil for 30 minutes until the water color changes, and strain. Now you’ve got some yummy vegetable stock to use at Thanksgiving, or whenever you need it. You can toss the strained veggies in your compost bin.

•Roasted Seeds – Wash the seeds and let them completely dry. Save them to plant later and grow your own pumpkins or roast them and eat them. Pumpkin seeds are a great source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in addition to being a good source of fiber and antioxidants.

•Bread – everyone has a pumpkin bread recipe. Add some walnuts or pecans and chocolate chips, yum!

•Pie – puree the flesh and save it for your Thanksgiving pumpkin pie…if it lasts that long.

•Fries – I’ve had sweet potato fries but had never heard of pumpkin fries. Leave it to Pinterest to find this one.

•Cake – somehow a pumpkin cake seems more like a healthy treat so it can be enjoyed more frequently. Unless of course, you put a thick glaze or frosting on it.

WHY FALL LAWN MAINTENANCE IS IMPORTANT
You’ve worked hard to keep your yard looking lush and healthy all summer long. Autumn is not the time to let things slide. If you do, you may be faced with a sickly lawn in April. Fall maintenance is important in order to give your grass what it needs to absorb the oxygen and nutrients required to survive a rough winter. Plus, letting down your guard now will make all of your landscaping look tired and worn.

FALL MAINTENANCE PROJECTS TO CONSIDER:
With so many different tasks to handle, you may be wondering what jobs are most important to keep your lawn looking good all year long. Here are some of the basics that we suggest:

1. Proper Mowing: just because the days are getting cooler doesn’t mean it is time to stop mowing. Of course, mowing to the right length this time of year is vital to keeping grass strong. Our professional mowing team will keep your lawn cut at about 2 ½ inches to ensure that it still gets the important sun, water, and oxygen it needs to thrive.
2. W**ding: fall is the perfect time to get rid of those w**ds. Tackling w**ds now will help make spring work much easier.
3. Raking Leaves: fall leaves may be gorgeous on the trees, but once they hit the ground, they become nothing but a big mess. Getting leaves off of the grass before winter strikes is important. If leaves are allowed to remain on the ground, they will choke off the grass by reducing water evaporation. Plus, they can harbor mold and fungus, while also allowing insects to infiltrate the grass and ground. In some cases, diseases from the trees can also be transferred to the ground and grass roots, which can kill your lawn.
4. Dethatching: unless you have been raking grass clippings (or mulching them) all summer long, thatch may have built up on your lawn. This can cause real problems if left untreated. Be sure that your lawn

It's that time of year again! Mid-September we at Champion begin to aerate and overseed our valued customers lawns. Give us a call today to schedule your aeration and overseeding.

Why aerate and overseed? Aeration opens up the lawn and allows for more air, water, and nutrients to pe*****te into the root zone and develop healthier and deeper root growth. Overseeding drops seed and opens a groove in the soil about a 1/4 inch deep that creates good seed-to-soil contact and germination rates for a thicker more lush lawn.

Let's talk Aeration!

As we approach the Fall season (and it’s fast approaching) now is the time to think about the benefits of aerating and overseeding your lawn. The undisputed best time of year to aerate and seed a lawn is in the fall. Warm soils, cool nights, and dying annual w**ds make fall conditions the ideal time for aeration combined with overseeding as well as general lawn seeding. Unlike fall, spring soils are cold and packed full of dormant w**d seeds ready to grow.

Listed are some of the benefits of aerating your lawn:

1) Aeration reduces soil compaction. Just as you wouldn’t try to plant a flower in concrete… a rock-hard soil bed is not conducive to a great lawn either! Loose soil allows grass roots to plunge deeper into the soil to find vital water resources in times of stress.

2) Aeration reduces thatch. Thatch is made up of grass stems and roots that accumulate faster than they break down. Excessive thatch creates an environment that is favorable to pests and diseases.

3) Aeration allows access to the root zone. By penetrating the soil, you’re allowing moisture, air, & food to the root zone where nutrients are absorbed.

4) Aeration enhances seed germination. Seeds germinate easily in aerator holes as the holes provide them a place to hide.

5) Overseeding introduces new grass seed to fill in bare or thin areas as well as thickens existing turf. Over time, grass plants reach their peak and need to be replaced. Different factors contribute to the breakdown of the grass including foot traffic, heat, lack of water, environmental conditions, pet waste, etc.

6) Overseeding builds resistance to disease. By incorporating different blends of grass seed, you reduce your risk to diseases that can wipe out your entire lawn.

7) Aeration and overseeding will help to reduce w**ds. Opportunistic w**ds germinate in areas where they can be successful. Crabgrass grows in thin areas, nutsedge pops up in thin/low spots, and broadleaf w**ds spread where there is little desirable grass. The best defense is to have a thick lawn.

8) Aeration and overseeding will immediately improve your lawn’s current appearance. If your lawn was attacked by fungus, insects, or animals, core aeration and overseeding will help. You’ll be able to see seed germination in 7-10 days.

Have you ever seen a roof covered with plants and wondered why?
A green roof (also known as a rooftop garden or a living roof) is a vegetative layer grown on a rooftop. The popularity of green roofs has increased in the United States due to their many benefits, while pretty, green roofs serve a much greater purpose than simple beautification.
1. Unlike traditional black tar roofs, green roofs reduce energy costs by absorbing heat instead of attracting it and providing natural insulation for buildings. According to a study conducted by the National Research Council of Canada, even a six-inch extensive green roof can reduce summer energy demands by more than 75 percent. By lowering air conditioning demand, green roofs decrease the production of associated air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Green roofs help reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect, a condition in which urban environments absorb and trap heat.
3. A green roof’s plants remove air particulates, produce oxygen and provide shade. Additionally, this natural protection against extreme heat enables green roofs to last twice as long as traditional rooftops.
4. Another important benefit of green roofs is their ability to reduce and slow stormwater runoff in urban environments. Because rooftops and streets in cities are hard surfaces, the volume and velocity of stormwater runoff increases tremendously and is a major source of flooding and pollution worldwide. Due to nonporous surfaces like pavement and rooftops, a typical city block generates more than five times more runoff than a woodland area of the same size. The ability a green roof has to absorb (and filter) water significantly lowers the risk of flash flooding and sewer overflows. In the summer, green roofs retain up to 90 percent of the precipitation that falls on them and up to 40 percent in the winter.
So, given all the benefits, why aren’t all roofs green? Outside of the United States, green roofs are much more prevalent. In Germany, for example, 14 percent of all roof area is green. Although green roofs are on the rise in the United States, they are not nearly as common, however increasing in popularity in major cities such as New York and Washington DC. Despite their many benefits, a major obstacle is the initial expense. Green roofs typically cost two to three times more than a non-green roof. Although green roofs are not simple or cheap, many cities recognize that long-term benefits outweigh the initial cost concerns. New York City, for example, has a pilot program encouraging the installation of green roofs by offering tax abatements. Provided those other cities follow suit, you might be seeing more and more roof gardens.
