Have you made any changes to your technology since your last security review?

Maybe you added a new computer, updated some software, or started working with a new vendor, cloud service, network device, or remote-access tool.

Each of these changes might seem routine on its own. But when combined, they can make your old technology inventory or network diagram outdated.

In Article 3 of our HIPAA Security Readiness series, we explain what HHS has proposed for technology asset inventories and network maps, why understanding ePHI flows matters, and how continuously maintained documentation can reduce the work required to reconstruct an entire year of changes.

We also share four practical steps that healthcare organizations can take this month.

“Addressable” does not mean “optional.”

That distinction is important under the HIPAA Security Rule today, and it could become even more significant under the proposed changes.

The current Security Rule allows healthcare organizations some risk-based flexibility when implementing certain “addressable” safeguards. But that flexibility comes with responsibility: organizations still need to evaluate the safeguard, make a reasonable and appropriate decision, and document it.

The proposed Security Rule would change that framework by eliminating the distinction between “required” and “addressable” implementation specifications and making most specifications mandatory, with limited exceptions.

In Article 2 of our HIPAA Security Readiness series, we break down:

✔ What “addressable” actually means today
✔ How the proposed rule would change the standard
✔ Why older security decisions deserve another look
✔ Four practical actions healthcare organizations can take now

The proposed rule isn't final. The current Security Rule is.

The proposed HIPAA Security Rule has not yet been enacted, but a significant regulatory milestone has shifted.

According to the latest federal regulatory agenda, final action on the proposed rule is now scheduled for July 2027. This extension grants healthcare organizations more time to prepare. However, one critical fact remains unchanged:

The existing HIPAA Security Rule remains fully in effect and is being rigorously enforced.

In anticipation of the final rule, we are launching a comprehensive 12-part educational series. This initiative is designed to equip healthcare organizations with a clear understanding of the proposed changes and actionable strategies to enhance their security posture immediately.

Our first article covers:
✔ What actually changed in the regulatory timeline
✔ What HIPAA already requires today
✔ The most significant proposed changes
✔ Practical steps every healthcare organization can begin now

Whether you manage a dental practice, physician’s office, a specialty clinic, or any other healthcare organization, this series is intended to serve as an essential resource for your team.
