Coontie (Zamia integrifolia), a beautiful & unique cycad native to most of Florida & some Caribbean islands, has an interesting history. Its enlarged underground stem makes it drought tolerant so it does well in poor, dry soils. Despite the toxins, the coonties' fat underground stems were used by indigenous peoples to produce a starch and later it was called Florida arrowroot and used to make Animal Crackers until this very slow-growing plant was nearly harvested to extinction and the Atala butterfly (Eumaeus atala) also was wiped out.
