We get asked all the time, is there a difference in Topdressing and Leveling?
Topdressing and leveling are often confused, topdressing is typically a thin layer of compost or a sand/organic blend (70/30 or 50/50) focused on improving soil structure and promoting better nutrient uptake. It will naturally help fill minor divots and uneven spots, but the goal is healthier turf and soil — not necessarily a perfectly smooth surface.
Leveling is focused on creating a flatter, more even lawn by eliminating highs and lows. This is usually done with a washed sand after the soil has already been amended organically. With our heavy clay soils, that step is extremely important for longer term healthy turf. That’s why we include granular organics with sand leveling services — you still get the benefit of feeding the soil without using compost that can dull or nick a reel or bedknife.
