My generator runs every week. Does that mean it's working correctly?

Your generator running its weekly exercise doesn't necessarily mean it's ready to power your entire house during an outage.

That short exercise tells us some important things: the engine can start, the controls are responding, and the generator can run.

But there's a difference between starting and successfully carrying your home's electrical load when utility power disappears.

A proper generator inspection can involve checking the battery, oil, filters, fuel system, electrical connections, transfer equipment, fault history and overall operation based on the unit and its maintenance schedule.

That's especially important heading into fall in North Carolina. Hurricane season isn't over yet, and colder weather brings its own outage risks.
