THE FIRST FROST SHOULDN'T BE WHEN YOU FIND OUT THE AC IS STILL IN THE WINDOW. ❄️
Western Maryland's first freeze usually lands without much warning. Before it arrives in Frostburg, Cumberland, or anywhere in the Tri-State Area, a renter can knock out this whole list in one afternoon:
🪟 Window AC units out. A unit left in the frame leaks cold air all winter and can crack its own seals. Pull it, seal the gaps, and store it dry.
🚿 Garden hoses off and drained. A hose left connected can freeze back into the pipe and split it behind the wall, the kind of leak you find in February.
🔥 Heat tested now. Turn the thermostat up and let the system run a full cycle today. Better to learn a furnace quirk on a 50-degree afternoon than at 2 AM on a 20-degree night.
💧 Faucets dripping on hard-freeze nights, especially along exterior walls and in older units. A slow drip keeps pressure from building against ice in the line.
Something not working during your test run, furnace short-cycling, a radiator that stays cold, a window that won't seal? Send it to us now. In October it's a scheduled fix, in January it's an emergency.
