The most expensive backyard mistakes usually happen before construction even starts.
And most of them are completely avoidable.
Here are five we see homeowners overlook:
1️⃣ Building one piece at a time without a master plan.
Today's patio can become tomorrow's obstacle when you decide to add a pool, pergola, or outdoor kitchen. Design the entire space first…even if you build it in phases.
2️⃣ Treating drainage like an afterthought.
North Texas clay soil and poor drainage can create expensive problems later. Water management needs to be part of the design from day one.
3️⃣ Accepting a vague completion timeline.
A start date isn't enough. Ask what happens if the contractor doesn't finish when promised…and get the answer in writing.
4️⃣ Designing for noon instead of real life.
Where does the sun hit at 5pm? Where will everyone gather? Where do you actually need shade? A beautiful design isn't enough if the space isn't comfortable when you use it most.
5️⃣ Choosing materials based on price alone.
The cheapest option today isn't always the least expensive over 10 years. Compare maintenance, durability, repairs, and lifespan before deciding.
A better backyard starts with better planning.
