Native Plant Profiles continue. An early February picture of the bids of Tall Oregon Grape, Mahonia (or Berberis) aquifolium. No other native flowering shrub is quite as early or important for late winter forage for resident or returning hummingbirds and other nectar seeking kin. Named by European Americans for Bernard McMahon who was an Irish-American horticulturist involved with the plant collections of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The SENĆOŦEN name for the plant is SENI,IȽĆ. It has many ethnobotanical uses. The botanical name refers to McMahon and the prickly leaves (aquifolium). While ubiquitous in our region it has a deserved and permanent place in the plant palette of all manner of gardens.
