A recent service call addressed a critical issue for one of our customers, whose lateral field failed due to solids and sludge entering the distribution box and drain field.

This problem typically arises from two main causes: overfilling of the septic tank, allowing solids to enter the drain field, or the absence of a sanitary tee or baffle, which would normally prevent such occurrences.

Regular maintenance and pumping of the septic system are crucial to prevent drain field failure and costly repairs.

Our solution involved uncovering and cleaning the distribution box, replacing the failed laterals, and installing a riser for future monitoring and maintenance.

“My septic tank is full, I think we need it pumped out.” But do you REALLY?

We've encountered a common misconception about septic tanks being full and requiring pumping lately so I want to clear those up so our customers can avoid some stress! And who knows, maybe you’ll learn some 💩 you didn’t know 😉

Let's clarify the facts:
1. A full septic tank is normal, and it will refill within 3 to 7 days after pumping, depending on water usage. The tank's water level should be at the bottom of the outlet pipe at all times after it refills.

2. An overfull tank, on the other hand, occurs when the water level rises above the outlet pipe, indicating an issue with the leach field. Your outlet pipe sits roughly 8-12 inches below the TOP of your tank. So it can be difficult to determine if that “full” water level you’re seeing is normal or a problem. But if you can see the top of your outlet pipe above the water level, your tank is at normal operating level.

If you suspect an issue, monitor for signs of septic system backup, such as
•gurgling toilets and sinks
•backups
•slow-draining fixtures
•wet yard areas
•water surfacing around the tank or drainfield.

If you're uncertain, give us a call! I do love chatting with our customers and we can help you determine if you really need that pump out done or not.
And rememeber, a maintained septic system is a happy septic system. Pump out the solids in your tank every 2-3 years to keep your septic and YOU happy!
