What looks like overgrown vegetation could be hiding a serious issue!

Today one of our Environmental Inspectors performed a BMP inspection to ensure a site was compliant with environmental regulations. While we can’t always see exactly what’s happening underground, a routine BMP inspection allows us to identify and address concerns before they lead to significant problems.

We perform inspections to catch and resolve issues like:

- Clogged & Hidden Piped Inlets/Outlets: Obscured structures stop water flow and cause backups and pooling.
- Subsurface Pipe Failures & Sinkholes: Undetected leaks (like this one) quietly wash away soil until the ground collapses.
- Structural Undermining: Hidden erosion can compromise driveways, pathways, and building foundations without a single warning sign on the surface.

Our team at Legacy Engineering is currently mapping shoreline buffers for Abel Lake in Stafford County, VA. Working off original 1968 plans mean converting older datums (elevation baseline standards) to modern surveys, a change that can shift measurements by ½ to 1½ feet in Virginia. So, on a sloping shoreline, that tiny vertical shift can throw a mapped buffer line off by dozens of feet.

Instead of using generic conversions, our team runs exact NGS (National Geodetic Survey) transformations, so every line hits the ground right where it belongs. Shoutout to our survey team for turning complex geodesy (the science of measuring the Earth) into pure site precision!

Happy International Coworking Day!

Great coworkers make the workday better, and we’re lucky to have a team that enjoys connecting both in and out of the office.
