At Shangri-La Gardens & Landscapes, we don't just talk about supporting our ecosystem—we put plants in the ground that make a difference.
This week, we installed 9 Orange Butterfly Milkweed, 9 Sweet Blue Aster, and 9 Gray Goldenrod along the northern edge of a landscape bed. Every plant was selected with purpose.
Orange Butterfly Milkweed serves as a host plant for Monarch caterpillars and provides valuable nectar for adult butterflies. Sweet Blue Aster and Gray Goldenrod bloom later in the season, supplying critical nectar resources when many other flowers have finished.
That northern bed edge may seem like a small space, but it now functions as a native pollinator corridor, helping provide food and habitat for Monarchs and countless native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects as they move through Virginia during migration.
Native landscaping isn't just about appearance. It's about rebuilding the connections between plants, pollinators, birds, and the ecosystems that depend on them.
That's the Native Guru approach—real habitat, real impact, one planting at a time.

Virginia sits directly within one of the most important monarch butterfly migration corridors in North America.
Every year, monarchs travel through Virginia during a multi-generational migration stretching thousands of miles between Mexico, the southern U.S., and Canada.
What many people do not realize is that this migration depends heavily on residential landscapes.
Native milkweed species are essential because monarchs can only lay eggs on milkweed. Native flowering plants also provide critical nectar sources during migration.
As native habitat continues to disappear, even small changes in our landscapes can make a measurable impact.
A single native garden bed in Virginia can become part of a continental wildlife corridor.
Native landscaping is not about letting properties “grow wild.”
It is about building intentional landscapes that are both functional and ecologically valuable.
This page will focus on practical ways Virginia homeowners can support pollinators, improve biodiversity, and create healthier landscapes using native plants.

Monarchs, Milkweed, and Why Native Matters

Native Guru is a new series focused on native plants, pollinators, and how landscapes in Virginia can function as real ecological systems—not just managed turf and ornamental beds.
We’re starting with one of the most important native plant relationships in North America: milkweed and the monarch butterfly.
Milkweed (Asclepias spp.) is not just beneficial for monarchs—it is essential to their life cycle.
The monarch butterfly depends on milkweed to complete its life cycle. It lays its eggs exclusively on milkweed plants, and when the eggs hatch, the caterpillars feed only on milkweed leaves. Without milkweed, the cycle stops completely.
Milkweed also plays a defensive role in survival. It contains natural compounds called cardenolides that monarch caterpillars ingest as they feed. These compounds remain in their system into adulthood, making monarchs less palatable to predators.
In Virginia, this relationship is especially important because we sit within a major monarch migration corridor. The availability of milkweed directly impacts how successfully monarchs can reproduce as they move through the region each season.
Restoring monarch populations starts at ground level—literally—with the right native plants in the right places.
Virginia-native milkweed options:
Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) — best for open fields and naturalized areas
Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) — ideal for wetter soils and rain-prone zones
Butterfly W**d (Asclepias tuberosa) — thrives in dry, well-drained soils and full sun
Each of these supports monarch reproduction while also strengthening local pollinator ecosystems.
This is where real impact starts: replacing convenience landscaping with functional native habitat.
More native plant breakdowns coming soon as part of ongoing field work and installs.

It's wonderful when I can take a project and make a complete transformation. This project has some twists and turns but turned out lovely. Removed grasses and weeds, pruned back hydrangea, cleaned out plants and put down 8 yards of mulch to bring this back to life and ready for Spring! We start the other side Friday.

As Spring approaches please remember:

🌿 Professional Landscaping vs. “Just Planting Flowers” 🌿

There’s a big difference between installing a lot of plants… and designing a bed correctly.

Overplanting might look impressive the day it goes in.
But 30–60 days later?

Plants begin to:
• Compete for space
• Block airflow
• Stretch and crowd
• Require more maintenance

At Shangri-La Gardens & Landscapes LLC, we design with the end result in mind.
✔ Proper spacing based on mature size
✔ Clean, intentional layout patterns
✔ Healthy root zones
✔ Long-term performance — not just day-one fullness

True curb appeal isn’t about how many plants you can fit into a bed.
It’s about structure, balance, and plant health that lasts all season.

Anyone can plant flowers.
We build landscapes that perform. 🌱
