I had a great day yesterday touring High Glen gardens in Frederick with the Master Gardeners of Frederick yesterday. I had never known of this garden/mini-arboretum to exist and was completely blown away. Many thanks to the Ausherman family for opening there property to us. Major kudos to the staff that maintain this property and keep it crisp all year round! I had too much fun to take photos and only snagged a few. None of mine do the property justice.

What if your lawn was small enough to mow in 20 minutes?

Many homeowners spend $1,500+ per year on mowing services.

But when part of the lawn becomes a native meadow, something interesting happens:

🌾 Less grass to mow
🌾 More flowers and pollinators
🌾 Lower long-term yard costs

Example:
Quarter-acre property
7,000 sq ft lawn

Replace 4,000 sq ft with a meadow.

Now the remaining lawn is small enough for most homeowners to mow themselves.

Annual mowing cost
$1,650 → $0

Seasonal meadow care
About $750 per year

That’s $900 saved every year while turning grass into habitat.

Sometimes the best lawn upgrade is simply less lawn.

Last year we installed a hillside pollinator garden at Buckingham's Choice in Frederick, MD. After that project and the installation of another ginormous retaining wall project funded by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, we have been called back to continue to transform the campus into an example of ecological horticulture.

Part of the fun was putting together a short video detailing the proposed improvements to get folks excited about what's to come. I'm no professional video editor by any means but its fun to have fun. Stay warm!

This was ornamental planting was completed a couple years ago at Manor Country Club in Rockville, MD. The area where the photo was taken is of the dining patio behind the clubhouse. The GM wanted to dress up the area both for diners and for those traversing the walkway to get to the front of the building. We kept the existing Spirea's and transplanted the 'Dwarf Burford' Holly's to form a row. From there we added more Dwarf Burford's, 'Bobo' Hydranageas, 'Visions' Astilbe, 'Beacon Silver' Lamium, and divided existing Liriope muscari for the front border planting as it tolerates salt and ice-melt products better than others.

1 Year of growth and looking forward to next year. We're treating the soil around the Inkberry's as this development was completely stripped of its topsoil. Also expecting to see more from the 'Purple Dome' Asters next year as they kept getting chomped on for a good portion of the growing season.
