In our line of work, we are constantly removing remnants of the past and replacing or upgrading them with more modern equipment. In doing so, it’s fun to imagine what was going on in the world when this panel was first installed, circa 1967/68. That was a huge year, historically speaking.

The Vietnam War was still going strong, both Martin Luther King Jr and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated, demonstrations were held at the summer olympics in support of racial equality, the first “manned” spacecraft orbited the moon, to name just a few massive events.
.
While all of that was going on, this Square D electrical panel was powering this home, and it did that until yesterday when we replaced it with a brand new Eaton BR Series electrical panel.
.
As an electrician, we get to see history at work on a daily basis. Especially living and serving our clients in Historic Frederick, Md.

Here’s a little project we did a few weeks ago for some really great people. This angled ceiling made the install of these two ceiling fans a fun challenge. We had to open the ceiling from joist to joist in order to install bracketed boxes that wouldn’t pivot or want to hang level to the ground. We also ran some data and coax home runs through the basement and up into the TV box we installed above the fireplace.

This 60-year-old electrical service was causing some serious issues so we came up with a plan to replace it ASAP. It was a multi-faceted service that included an exterior disconnect / sub-panel directly below the meter base, a solar combiner box and junction box, vertical troughs housing the Romex wire on the interior and a relay bank and transformer for some of the low-voltage switching throughout the house. This one took us all day and we had to do a lot of problem solving on the job, which is always fun, but exhausting. After a long day, we were happy with the finished product and our client was safe and owners of a brand-new electrical service.

We came across this 1960s era relay bank yesterday while replacing an old electrical service. This was a glance back in time into some of the state of the art equipment of the 1960s. Not many homes had systems like this so it was a real treat to get to not only look at the system, but to also rewire it. Each of these relays is controlled by a low-voltage switch that is being sent power from the transformer in the upper wire way. Pretty cool stuff and still very functional today. They don’t make them like they used to.

Air movement in a home is essential in order to create a comfortable space. Air conditioning is great but add some ceiling fans and you’re really living comfortably. Sometimes we get the opportunity to install a real beauty of a fan, like this one. This somewhat lightweight propeller-style ceiling fan not only moves air perfectly through this space, but it also ties the room together aesthetically.

Purchasing an historic home is a big undertaking. There’s just so much to think about and usually a lot of work to do. In some cases the electrical conductors that are powering large portions of your historic home have been in place for a century or more. In those cases, it’s a good idea to replace the antique circuitry with new, up-to-date wires, boxes and devices. But that can be a massive undertaking. We recommend taking it one step at a time. Go room by room or floor by floor, replacing the home’s circuitry little by little.

Here’s a little time lapse video of the Lumen Brothers on a recent historic rewire project for some very cool clients. This old house is beautiful and we were really happy to be able to breathe new life into it by rewiring receptacles on the first floor.

For those of you who don’t know Goodloe or his work, he’s an accomplished author, songwriter and painter who is prolific in whatever he does. Recently he’s been commissioned to do some big murals around the DMV area, including a giant mural here in our hometown of Frederick, Md.

Happy Tuesday! Recently, we’ve been traveling back in time to repair 100 year old electrical systems and teleport the home’s therein into the modern world. As you can see from this photo, bending space-time has reversed the aging process for Josh while accelerating Doug’s aging to that of a geriatric scientist. Its even turned us into cartoon versions of ourselves. It’s all worth it though.

Lumen Brothers responded to an emergency service call this weekend. This Challenger panel was still functioning even with the breakers and bus bar in this condition. It wasn’t until new work was performed by an HVAC team that they realized something was wrong with the electrical system. We were able to come in and change out the panel in just a few hours. Now our clients have a brand new Square D panel and she looks beautiful but best of all, it’s safe.

Challenger panels are still in use in many homes today. Much like the Stab-Lock FPE panels, these Challenger panels have an issue with the bus bar heating up. This caused Challenger to lose its UL listing. If you still have one of these panels in your home, please reach out for a free consultation.

Day 2 of the Frederick Sandwich Challenge took us to @7thstreetsandwich, one of Frederick’s most well-known sandwich shops. This place has an elaborate menu of delicious sandwiches, all hand-made when you order them. Super tasty food, friendly people and a unique beach feel to the decor. I got the Hossegor, a turkey, Brie and pesto sandwich... holy cow! Incredible!

If you’re a Frederick resident and haven’t been here, what are you waiting for?! They’re open for takeout and they’re food is great!

Old homes are beautiful and filled with history. As an electrician, you get a chance to learn how electrical installations were done throughout the past by opening up devices and rewiring these old time capsules.
.
Here are a couple of images of a home built in the 1940s that we’re currently rewiring. The first pictures depict 2 1940s era “stackable” switches. These 80-some year old devices have stood the test of time. The wire of choice from that era is commonly referred to as BX. This metal-sheathed set of conductors was implemented in our industry following the use of knob and tube wiring, which went out of fashion following the 1930s. The devices had no grounding terminal because during this era, branch circuit “grounding/bonding” was done using the metal jacket of the conductors. This type of conductor is still used today but is commonly now called MC (metal-clad) and contains a grounding conductor inside the sheathing to properly ground each device to the main service ground.
.
Nothing is more fascinating to us than seeing the history of our industry displayed and still powering these historic beauties. Old homes can be challenging to rewire but the lessons that come from these projects continue to shape us as electricians during every project.
