The Queen of all dahlias…Café au Lait

Iconic, romantic and highly sought for by brides for weddings.

I gifted some tubers of this variety to a fellow flower farmer friend of mine, Kim WM Strother Farm . She wanted to start growing dahlias this season and has since brought many tubers from me which I will forever be grateful. She sent me a picture of Café Aulait she grew at her farm (last picture). It’s so beautiful.

Kinda cool seeing your tubers (now her tubers & dahlias) out in the world. ❤️

We blinked and here we are in September. Back to school is in full swing. Delsea started Tuesday and Franklinville elementary school started yesterday. With three kiddos in three different schools, this week has been busy for everyone, and I’m a little behind trying to get myself organized and adjusted to new routines. I have been getting messages about back to school flowers so wanted to share!

This month, I will have back-to-school themed jars available for the first week of school, back-to-school night, or anytime you want to surprise a teacher, aid or administrator in your life. They are so cute and the perfect gift just to say you are thinking of them. Tags are writable this year.

Want to have some flowers delivered to a teacher? The second picture is a surprise arrangement from one of my subscribers. He had ordered an arrangement for his wife, who is a kindergarten teacher. I absolutely loved making this arrangement for her. ❤️

Wishing all the kiddos, teachers, aides and administrators a wonderful school year. I will always say it, but teachers have one of the most important jobs there is. I know of several teachers that have made a difference in my life — especially in high school.

If I had to choose only one dahlia to grow, it would hands down be KA Cinder Rose. A blend of pink and mauve with the faintest gold tips. It’s enchanting, and my goal is to be able to grow an entire row of this variety one day.

It hasn’t been easy getting here. I was building up stock and lost some of the tubers and cuttings but am grateful to a dahlia friend Honey Bee Dahlias for a new tuber and was lucky enough that two tubers had made it from last season. I have three plants growing. Tonight was my first flush from one plant. 💛

I hope to get several tubers this season, and my focus will be taking as many cuttings as I can to increase my stock.

I hope the month of August will feel as long as that unforgettable February.

With summer winding down and some feedback, I will be offering small bouquets every Sunday in August at the stand until sold out.

Jars will still be available as well, but I’m going to bring back the $1 off deal. If you return your old jar, take $1 off your new jar. I will have a crate set up today.

Also, please feel free to message me if you need a jar or bouquet made. With a little notice, I can make it up for pickup.

Let’s hope for a slower August. 💕

I was never a big fan of sunflowers (blasphemy, I know), and if you have been with me from the beginning, you know I don’t grow a lot, and it’s not because they are difficult to grow—on the contrary, they are actually super easy to grow and a great beginner flower. They really don’t take too much work once they are planted. I enjoy growing them with my kiddos to attract birds to the garden, but I find them too bulky and difficult to design with, especially the big ones.

Last year, I grew a small amount of a variety called Procut, and well, I’m totally obsessed. They were beautiful and pollenless. This season I have succession planted 1000 each of my two favorites—ProCut White Lite and ProCut Peach Lite, and a lot are ready to be harvested.

The trick is to plant them super close together—this way, they don’t get too big. I have also been able to get really small ones and they are absolutely adorable. Next season, I plan on starting earlier and having sunflowers all season by succession planting.

Stand will have these beauties starting tomorrow night into Sunday. I will be offering bunches and mixed jars—they’re the perfect size. Tonight I dropped off mixed bouquets at Moods with these beauties tucked in them for tomorrow. 🌻

Night Silence

This beautiful dahlia was new to me last season, and I only got one bloom. I was able to save some tubers and have two plants going this season. She is absolutely gorgeous – with dark foliage and a dark raspberry/mauve color.

This time last year I had so many dahlias blooming, but with the cold winter and vole damage, my overwintered dahlias were slow getting started. July’s heatwaves haven’t been ideal, and let’s not talk about the insects, specifically the borers. They are awful.

With all the maintenance and care that it takes to grow these, it’s easy to become discouraged, but in my five years of growing dahlias, I know and can appreciate they will bloom when they are ready.

Soon there will be so many dahlias, but until then, I will keep enjoying the ones I do have blooming, especially ones like this one pictured.

Happy last Saturday of July – summer, please slow down!
