2026 has been and continues to be a difficult and also awesome year for the workshop. I was the sickest I have been, that I can remember, at the beginning of the year. My retirement from the military has sped up and is in full swing, started my RV repair certification and I was able to see my oldest son graduate from high school this last weekend! Stay with us over then next few month as there will be some changes and additions to provide a better product and service for our customers.

Sorry we be missing in action its been a busy few days.. 😊

This project was an entryway bench for shoes. The skills for this project is the layout and cutting of dado / rabbit / groove with a router and straight bit. The goal is to layout and cut tight joints with simple tools a person might already of in their work shop. I used a 1/2 inch straight cut templating bit in my router with a piece of plywood as a guide. Simple, fast and effective. Again just 2x4s from the big box store finished in white sherwin williams emerald urethane paint.

This was the skill builder shelf project from a couple days ago. The purpose was to pick a technique that was new or you hadn't done in awhile with limited tools and work it into something. On the shelf I just used some old 2x4s and scrap wood, working on wood shaping with a belt sander. It i uses the table saw and a jig saw for the rough out but the fine tuning of everything was worked with a belt sander and hand sander to soften and blend the edges together.. This is a skill developed and reinforced for future projects. Plus the wife gets a new one of a kind pice of furniture and place to put her bags at the end of a long day!

From a few boards of ash, maple and walnut courtesy of Detwiler Custom Woodworking . To a 24 inch round ash disk, cut using a custom made circle guide (piece of plywood with 2 home in it and a router suck to it), that i nicknames the big ash frizzbee (not original) and some time in the laser to design and lay out the lettering. All the walnut was resawed to ~3/16 inch and laser cut. After that came hand placing and gluing each letter (used a lot of blue tape for alignment). To the final packaging of the sign of shipment, yes I made that monstrosity of a box because I couldn't find one to fit.

I call days like this, skill builders, Saturday I need to clear my head, so I grabbed some scrap wood and figured out a project. This is designed to get back to foundational mechanics in the wood shop and use as few tools as possible working on techniquesthat i havent use for a while or trying new ones. This will be a simple hall / entry bench made using a table sae for all the cuts and a router for the joints / edge treatment, and a 5 inch RO sander for the surface treatment. The wife has selected her desired finish so that will be tonight. Total working time was about 3 hours for the bench. If feels good to finish a simple project. Now on to all the other projects and ready for the week ahead!
