If you’re anything like me, you’ve seen all the IKEA hacks promising “easy built-ins.”
And look, there’s nothing wrong with a little DIY, especially when budget matters.

But here’s what those videos usually skip 👇

1. Tools
You almost definitely don’t own the right tools for a clean finish—unless you moonlight as a craftsman. Trim work is where most DIYs fall apart.

2. Time
Sure, you might have time for a project.
But do you have time to learn an entirely new skill?
Like scribing infill stiles to a curved wall… and fixing the surprises that come with it. Professionals price those headaches in for a reason.

3. The end result
Even when it “works,” it usually still looks DIY.
And if you do pull it off, be honest—what was that time actually worth?

DIY has its place.
Built-ins just happen to be one of those projects where experience quietly makes all the difference.

We like a hero shot as much as anyone, but that’s not the work.

The work is in the reveals, margins, alignment, and details no one notices—unless they’re wrong. That’s where quality of Parallel Millworks is decided, and where we stand apart.

All we want for Christmas is a color-drenched office…with some brass sconces and a plaid carpet.

Loving the details in this white oak. This piece is working with a reeded drawer panel and a cabinet mould profile—also referred to as a scribe or pencil mould. These are subtle details that pay homage to traditional profiles, but anchor the cabinetry in modern design.

Bonus tip: Reeded—convex, Fluted—concave

Here’s a quick walkthrough of this custom walk-in closet we finished with double hanging, full-height storage, and an island for extra drawers and organization. Clean, practical, and built for real life.

If you’re having work done in your own home, always request all-wood construction from your builder to avoid substitute materials like MDF or Melamine. They have their place, but they aren’t fit for your custom projects.

As homeowners, we spend our lives in spaces we didn’t completely choose. Even when we upgrade or renovate, the bones of our homes are still the work of an architect we’ve likely never met.

But that doesn’t mean we’re powerless in the process.

We may not control every corridor, but we can shape the energy inside them. We can influence the warmth a room carries and the intention behind its layout.

Whether you want simplicity, or embrace creative clutter (especially if you have 3 kids like me). Whatever your version is—that’s the part you get to choose. The way a space makes you feel shouldn’t have to be a luxury. It’s where thoughtful design becomes less about style, and more about soul.

We’re deep into the summer heat—and deep into a lot of fun projects too. Lately, we’ve been seeing a trend: more and more clients are looking to upgrade or reimagine their home office spaces.

It makes sense. Whether you’re working from home full-time or just need a spot to stay organized, a custom office setup can make a huge difference. There’s so much room for creativity with layout, storage, and design—it’s one of our favorite types of spaces to work on.

If you’ve been thinking about a home office refresh, we’d love to help. We can walk you through the design process and provide full detail drawings and renderings so you can really picture it before we start building.

Reach out any time—we’re here when you’re ready!
