I was recently called out to inspect a roof that had just been installed by another contractor. Unfortunately, what I found was disappointing.

The ridge vent installation was left incomplete, ridge cap shingles were never finished, several shingles were damaged or improperly installed, downspouts weren’t secured correctly, and even the chimney crown had been coated with an improper product that is already failing.

These are issues that should have been addressed before the job was considered complete.

A new roof is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your home. Don’t choose a contractor based solely on the lowest price. Take the time to:

✔️ Read Google reviews.
✔️ Verify they’re licensed and insured.
✔️ Ask for references and photos of recent work.
✔️ Make sure they provide a written warranty.
✔️ Hire a contractor with experience and a proven reputation.

Poor workmanship can lead to leaks, premature roof failure, and costly repairs that could have been avoided.

🚨 Homeowners: Do Your Homework Before Hiring a Roofing Contractor 🚨

I recently completed an inspection that uncovered several serious installation deficiencies that could have been avoided with proper workmanship.

Here’s what I found:

❌ Extensive mold growth throughout the attic due to poor ventilation and excessive trapped moisture.

❌ An improperly installed ridge vent that is not allowing the attic to exhaust heat and moisture as it should.

❌ Every roof penetration—including the bathroom exhaust fans and the furnace vent stacks—was terminated into the attic instead of being properly vented through the roof. This allows warm, moisture-laden air to accumulate in the attic, creating ideal conditions for mold growth and premature deterioration of the roof structure.

❌ Improperly installed roof penetrations that have created active leak points.

❌ Asphalt shingles installed on a section of the roof with a slope too low for a conventional shingle roofing system, increasing the risk of water intrusion.

These aren’t just cosmetic issues—they can lead to:
• Costly mold remediation
• Wood rot and structural damage
• Reduced insulation performance
• Higher energy bills
• Premature roof failure

A roof is a complete system. Proper ventilation, flashing, roof penetrations, underlayment, and using the correct roofing material for the roof’s pitch are just as important as the shingles themselves.

The cheapest estimate can quickly become the most expensive mistake.

Before hiring a contractor:
✔️ Verify they’re licensed and insured.
✔️ Read reviews from real customers.
✔️ Ask how they handle attic ventilation and roof penetrations.
✔️ Make sure they’re installing the correct roofing system for your home’s design—not simply the least expensive option.

With over 14 years of roofing experience, I’ve built my career by learning the trade from the ground up. I began my roofing career at kerkan Roofing, where I developed the fundamentals of quality roofing craftsmanship. I later continued my career with Kelly Brothers, expanding my experience in both residential and commercial roofing.
I then spent 8½ years at Deer Park Roofing, working my way up to Foreman. During that time, I led crews and managed a wide variety of roofing projects while becoming highly skilled in EPDM rubber roofing, TPO, PVC, and asphalt shingle roofing. My experience includes everything from leak diagnostics and repairs to complete roof replacements on both residential and commercial properties.
After more than a decade of working for respected roofing companies, I decided to start Rucker Roofing, LLC. My goal has always been to provide homeowners and business owners with honest communication, quality craftsmanship, and dependable service. Every project is completed with the same level of care and attention to detail that I’ve built my reputation on throughout my career.
