Monday was a good one🏌️

Our team hit the course for the Pelotonia Golf Outing with our friends at Huntington National Bank. This is an event we've participated in for years now, alongside the bike race, s***t shoot, and even an upcoming volleyball tournament.

HNB has helped raise over $50M of the $339M+ Pelotonia has generated for cancer research since 2009 (and counting!).

One story from the day stuck with several of us: a young mom currently living a full, active life because of research Pelotonia funded.

That's what this is all about. That's the mission.

🎣 We send our own team phishing emails on purpose.

Not to catch anyone. To protect them. Because we know our people are human, and we'd rather they stumble on a test we control than the real thing.

Last week, one of them clicked.

Someone who's done the training. Someone who should know better.

The email looked like an HR notice of an updated vacation policy, shared as a Google Doc. So they clicked to read it.

That's not a knock on them. It's the whole point. Doing the training doesn't make you immune. Because the dangerous phishing emails don't look dangerous anymore.

We're all braced for the obvious stuff: the misspelled email from a bank you don't use, the "urgent" wire transfer, the prince with money to move. But the one that gets you looks like a memo from HR. A shared doc from a coworker. A calendar invite. Something so routine you click before you think... which is exactly the point.

That's why 70% of cyberattacks start with human error.

Not because people are careless, but because the bait stopped looking like bait.

The goal was never "never click." It's building a culture where the test is safe and the mistake is a lesson.

And it comes down to one habit: when a message asks you to click, log in, or open something (even a boring something) slow down for three seconds and ask whether you expected it. Hover the link. Confirm the sender. When in doubt, check with the person it claims to be from.

No shame in verifying. That's the job.

But here's the bigger question, and it's for the leaders reading this: is your team running drills like this?

Because you don't build a security-aware culture by telling people to be careful. You build it by giving them safe places to slip up and learn... before it counts. A culture where tests happen on purpose and mistakes become lessons doesn't appear on its own.

Jon calls Katie. He says he's not at home but needs to update his direct deposit — can she take care of it real quick? He sounds like Jon. He knows things Jon would know. Nothing feels wrong.
Katie wants to help but slows her roll and doesn't act on it.
Instead, she finds a second way to reach Jon (a number she already has, not one he gave her) and verifies the request before touching anything.

That's it. That's the move.

The takeaway: If someone calls asking you to update financial information, account details, or anything sensitive (even if it looks, talks, walks, sneezes, like someone you trust) verify through a second channel before you act.

Every time. No exceptions.

🌟 Employee Spotlight: Meet Ed Campbell

Ed brings a strong work ethic and a “learn it fast and get it done” mindset to the team. He loves getting out in the field for on-site visits and making sure things are done right for our clients.

Ed's most important role in life is father to his 11 children. He said one of his proudest life moments is seeing all of his adult children earn college scholarships... we may need Ed to host a parenting webinar on that topic because that is the pinnacle of impressive.

When he’s not working, you can find him playing basketball in a men’s league, traveling to cool places, or showing off his hidden talent for dancing. He’s also got great taste in cars, with an S550 Benz at the top of his dream list.

Around the office, Ed says Jon McLachlan is the go-to person for a laugh, which tells you a lot about the kind of team culture we value here at KW.
