While this may resemble chinch bug damage, it is most likely chemical burn. We were not able to inspect the backyard or speak with the homeowner, as this isn’t a yard we service, but we still wanted to point it out. It appears that a two-wheeled object was transported between the front and back—possibly multiple times. The biggest telltale sign that this is chemical burn is the color of the grass. If I had to guess, based on similar situations we have seen in the past, masonry or concrete work was likely done in the backyard, and some of the chemicals in the mortar or concrete caused the damage.

While this may be mistaken for drought stress, the clear, well-defined edges between the browned and green grass blades indicate otherwise. This is most likely chinch bug damage, which can be an easy fix. Once the chinch bugs are eliminated and proper watering is maintained, the lawn should recover within 4 to 6 weeks.

This is drought stress in Bermuda grass.
Although Bermuda is a warm-season grass that thrives in the Texas heat, it still needs at least one hour of watering each week. Ideally, water twice a week, spacing the days evenly. For best results, use the cycle-and-soak method: water each zone for 15 minutes, let it soak while the other zones run, then return to that zone for another 15 minutes—totaling 30 minutes per zone on each watering day.

With August just around the corner, so is the hottest part of the year. That also means your lawn needs extra water and should never be cut while it’s stressed.

This is St. Augustine grass showing signs of severe heat stress. The grass blades first curl inward, then begin to lose their color—fading to a brown or tan hue. If this lawn were watered twice a week for a total of at least 90 minutes, it would regain much of its color.

The recommended watering schedule is twice per week, spaced evenly throughout the week. On each watering day, you’ll want to use a cycle soak method: water each zone for 15 minutes, then repeat the process two more times. That’s three 15-minute sessions per zone, totaling 45 minutes per watering day.
