Dolly Parton has long been in a class of her own in the Smokies. Thanks to scientists, now she’s got her own species, too. Castanea, the journal of the Southern Appalachian Botanical Society, recently named a newly discovered species of lichen for the Sevier County native. Japewiella dollypartoniana, also known as “Dolly’s Dots,” appears throughout much of the Smokies, particularly in areas over 4,000 feet in elevation such as Purchase K**b, Mount Cammerer, and Mount Hardison. According to researcher Jessica Allen, the species grows most frequently on the branches of azaleas and rhododendron at mid to high elevations, and can be recognized by its small greenish-yellow mounds of what looks like piles of tiny cotton balls.

“When my co-author, James Lendemer, and I found the species fruiting on top of Hangover Mountain, we sat down to eat our lunch and discuss what to name it,” Allen explains. “We were looking over at the mountains of Tennessee and had been listening to Dolly Parton’s music on the way to our field site, so we were thinking about her and especially her accomplishments as a musician and philanthropist.”

I’m always trying to come up with something new to keep our followers engaged and learning about trees. Sometimes that means throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. Sooooo, spaghetti thrown. 

So we’re going to try a new Monday segment:

🌳 THIS WEEK IN TREES & SCIENCE

I’m always reading peer reviewed papers, studies, field studies, white papers. Basically anything I can get my hands on. I’d say it was a hobby but I think it might be more of an addiction.

Every Monday I’m going to pick out some of the better research, new studies and tree related news I come across. Some weeks it may be brand new research. Other weeks it may be something from the last month or something happening here in Texas.

I want to break down what the research actually found and what it could mean for the trees growing here in North Texas.

Episode #1

A study published August 10 looked at how urban and suburban trees responded to extreme drought. Researchers used tree cores to reconstruct years of growth and compared how the trees handled drought and how well they recovered afterward. And it wasn’t a small study. Researchers collected almost 180 tree cores and reconstructed 28 years of growth history from 1995 to 2022.

Urban trees generally had lower recovery and resilience after extreme drought than suburban trees. In this study water availability was also the biggest factor limiting growth.

These urban trees weren’t just being ignored. They received supplemental irrigation during hot and dry periods along with normal pruning and fertilization. They still didn’t recover as well.

The researchers point to urban heat, soil compaction, restricted water infiltration and limited rooting conditions as stresses that irrigation alone may not completely overcome. Ding ding ding lol. A tree can be getting watered and still be growing in a terrible root environment.

There was another part of the study thats important but not shocking.  High growth did not necessarily mean high resilience. I see a severely Lions tailed Red Oak in the distance lol. Some fast growing urban trees could put on good growth while still being less capable of recovering from extreme drought.

We tend to look at new growth and think, “That tree is doing great.” And often it is but not always. Growth tells us something about a tree. It doesn’t tell us everything about its ability to handle stress or recover from it.

For North Texas trees the takeaway is you can’t look at growth alone. You have to look at the environment the tree is growing in. The soil. Available rooting space. Water movement. Heat. Previous stress and how well that tree can recover when the next bad summer comes along. If you’re finding this interesting look up research on “drought legacy effects” in trees.
Because around here we know there’s always another bad summer coming.

Leaf temperature field experiment. The big takeaways that I want the homeowner to get from this video is just how brutal it is on our trees and just how much proper preparation can make all the difference. Also something that surprised me. Compare the concrete temperatures to the surface of soil minus grass temperature🤯.
