Batten down the hatches every one🌬️🌳. Not necessarily Tree related. I just thought I would share our annual Halloween Party digs. This year’s haunted maze was really great. And I thought I’d take a video of it without the lights on while it’s still up. I have a feeling in two hours. It’s all gonna come down and hopefully the kids party Friday and Saturday aren’t too disappointed.😂😢. Stay safe🙌🏼👻🎃

Remember, science is important. But science also changes as we learn more.

The first image is an actual 1950s ORTHO advertising poster promoting chemical spraying for “better fruit.” This was sold to large nurseries as well as advertise for home use. DDT containing ORTHO Fruit Tree Spray was sold during this period for fruit-tree pest control. Ads like this are pretty wild to look back on.

The second is an actual 1937 Dow Chemical advertisement for DOWAX. Dow promoted spraying transplanted trees with an emulsified wax coating to reduce water loss while their root systems recovered. The ad went so far as to say DOWAX “promises to reduce mortality to negligible proportions.”

By 1939-40, experimental work found little benefit for transplanted deciduous trees and actually reported damage to some conifers. In one test, unsprayed arborvitae had 87.5% survival compared with 68.3% and 71.3% in two DOWAX-treated groups.

The lesson isn’t that science was wrong.

The lesson is that science keeps moving forward. 🌳

Sometimes looking backward is a pretty good reminder to keep questioning what we’re doing today. And gave us cool art. I’ve got a thing for 30’s-60’s advertising art🤷🏼‍♂️
