How Do I Know If My Garage Door Spring Is Broken?

A broken garage door spring usually causes the door to stop lifting properly because the spring carries most of the door’s weight.

Common Signs of a Broken Garage Door Spring
1. The Door Won’t Open

The garage door may:

Not open at all
Open only a few inches
Start opening and then stop

The opener often struggles because the spring is no longer supporting the weight.

2. You Heard a Loud Bang

Many homeowners describe it as sounding like:

A gunshot
A firecracker
A loud snap in the garage

That noise is often the spring breaking under tension.

3. The Door Feels Extremely Heavy

If you disconnect the opener and try lifting the door manually, it may feel much heavier than normal.

4. You Can See a Gap in the Spring

Look above the garage door.

Extension or torsion springs should appear tightly wound. A broken spring usually has a visible separation or gap.

5. The Door Opens Crooked or Uneven

If one spring breaks, the door may lift unevenly or tilt to one side.

6. The Garage Door Opener Strains

You may notice:

Motor humming
Slow movement
Opener struggling or stopping

The opener is not designed to lift the full door weight alone.

Important Safety Warning

Garage door springs are under very high tension and can cause serious injury if handled incorrectly.

Do not attempt DIY spring replacement unless you have proper training and tools.

Types of Garage Door Springs
Torsion Springs

Mounted above the garage door.

Most common in modern homes.

Extension Springs

Located along the sides of the door tracks.

Common on older garage doors.

What to Do Next

If you suspect a broken spring:

Stop using the garage door
Disconnect the opener if needed
Avoid forcing the door open
