I’ve got one year to turn this yard around. It’s thin, patchy, and full of sandburs and w**ds.

Today was the starting point: aeration, fertilizer, pre-emergent, and w**d control. I’ll show the progress every six week; the good and the ugly.

Should I have taken this one on?

One brown patch in the sunny part of the yard. The rest of the lawn is green and getting watered. That pattern made me get down into the grass and look, and I found chinch bugs right away.

Watch the tiny black bug with white markings walk across the screen. It took me longer to film one than it did to find them. 👀

Watering, fertilizing, treating the lawn… and it’s still struggling?

Compacted soil could be part of the problem. Core aeration opens up the soil so water and oxygen can reach the root zone, and roots have more room to grow and take up nutrients.

Sometimes the lawn needs help below the surface. 🌱

Those w**ds you see next spring often got their start in the fall. 🌱

Fall pre-emergent helps stop winter w**ds before they establish. Timing matters. And it needs to be watered in after application! A little work now can mean a lot fewer w**ds later.

It’s getting to be pre-emergent season.

Applying pre-emergent is only part of the process. It must be applied before w**ds germinate, at the correct rate, and watered into the soil. Miss one of those steps, and w**ds can still break through.

Just because your sprinklers run doesn’t mean your lawn is getting watered properly. Buried or damaged heads, incorrect water pressure, compacted soil, and evaporation can all keep water from reaching the root zone. Check your coverage, not just your controller.

You can follow every direction on the bag and still end up with a product that’s wrong for your lawn.

Some store fertilizers deliver a quick burst of nitrogen, include phosphorus your soil may not need, or bundle w**d killer into a feeding when you only need fertilizer. And a bag marketed for “any lawn” may be a poor fit for Bermuda or St. Augustine here in North Texas.

Read beyond the big promises on the front of the bag. Your lawn needs the right nutrients for your grass and soil.

This lawn needed a little more than a quick fix. Compacted soil, thin turf and some low spots made this one a fun renovation project.

We core aerated it with multiple passes, worked compost soil into the low areas, then finished with fertilizer and winter rye overseeding. Now we let the lawn do its thing. 🌱
