"Mow at 4 inches all the time" might be the worst advice for Bermuda grass. 🚜

Here's what's happening: as Bermuda gets into the 4–6 inch range, debris builds up under the canopy where you can't see it. When your lawn tries to wake up in spring, it's being choked out by all of that. 😬

The fix: mow it at 1–2 inches, at least once a week, and you'll be on your way to a thicker, greener lawn.

If your North Texas lawn isn't the one you're proud of when you pull into the driveway, you're in the right place.

I'm Aaron Shehan, founder of Gro Lawn, Inc. - the company behind UglyW**ds Texas - and a 30-year agronomist. I've spent my career studying the soils, climate, and warm-season grasses of North Texas, and I've been featured in Lawn & Landscape magazine for the results our science-based programs deliver.

Here's the truth most companies won't tell you: the big corporate sprayers treat every yard exactly the same, and those confusing DIY products burn more lawns than they fix. Every lawn is different, and different grass types require different treatment programs.

That's why we don't guess. We test.

And if I can't help you, I'll tell you. Education first, sales second.

🦟 THE RAIN LEFT. THE MOSQUITOES MOVED IN.

You stepped outside to enjoy your backyard… and became the buffet.

All that rain last week left standing water—and mosquitoes don’t need a pond. A bucket, clogged gutter, plant saucer, or forgotten toy can give them a place to breed.

Walk your property. Dump the water. Check it again after the next rain.

You pay the mortgage. You should get to enjoy the backyard.

Think letting your Bermuda grow tall makes it healthier? It can actually do the opposite. 🌱

When Bermuda gets too tall, it can get weaker and thin out over time. The fix is simple: keep it low and mow regularly. That's how you maintain thick, healthy grass.

Mowing heights vary by variety, so check what's best for your lawn.

🚨 “MOW IT TALLER TO HELP IT THROUGH DROUGHT.”

My Bermuda test plots didn’t get that memo.

These three plots are non-irrigated. Same rainfall. Same fertilizer. Same mowing frequency.

Look at the pictures:

✅ 1.75 inches: Green and recovering.
❌ 3 inches: Laying over and not recovering.
❌ 3.75 inches: Laying over and not recovering.

The taller mowing did NOT help.

In this test, the shorter Bermuda is recovering better with the same rainfall. The taller areas have a tangled canopy and debris buildup—and they’ll need considerably more spring prep.

Bermuda isn’t a grass you can neglect with the mower and fix with the sprinkler.

Hint: It includes how to mow it properly. 😉

My grass needs water, fertilizer, and a pep talk.

This w**d? Apparently, it just needs a 16-foot flatbed trailer. 😂

Growing right in the middle of it. No irrigation. No lawn care. Just out here living its best life.

If w**ds can find a home on my trailer, imagine what they can do in your lawn.

🚨 THIS LAWN NEEDED AN HONEST ANSWER—NOT ANOTHER APPLICATION.

A customer called us out to treat his lawn. Before we started, our technician flagged it: “Aaron needs to look at this one.”

In this video, I show you why.

These areas don’t get enough sunlight to support healthy turf. Switching to St. Augustine wouldn’t solve the problem here either.

No fertilizer or w**d-control program can replace missing sunlight.

My recommendation? Stop fighting the shade. Use shade-tolerant plants, mulch, or a properly planned rock bed instead.

Real expertise means knowing when to treat—and when to tell someone to spend their money differently.

At Gro Lawn, we don’t take on every lawn just to add another customer.

🚨 THE CHEAP LAWN GUY GOT PAID. NOW THE HOMEOWNER GETS THE REPAIR BILL.

This St. Augustine lawn received a high-nitrogen, Bermuda-style fertilizer blend while North Texas conditions were favorable for brown patch.

That’s a recipe for making a disease problem worse.

St. Augustine needs a program built for St. Augustine—not whatever’s already in the truck.

Now they’ve called me to help fix it.

Here’s the frustrating part: controlling the disease doesn’t instantly turn those brown circles green. With the growing season winding down, recovery may have to wait until spring.

It’s expensive to hire cheap.

🚨 WANT TO ATTRACT ANTS? TURN YOUR CRAPE MYRTLE INTO AN ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT SUGAR BUFFET.

See those little bugs underneath this leaf? Those are aphids.

That shiny coating is honeydew—the sticky, sugary waste they leave behind while feeding on your tree.

Ants LOVE it. They’ll even protect aphids from predators to keep the sugar flowing. 🐜

Honeydew can also grow black sooty mold, leaving your leaves—and whatever’s underneath the tree—sticky and dirty.

Your tree isn’t putting on lip gloss. It’s serving an ant buffet.

🚨 THAT’S NOT GRASS GROWING FASTER. THAT’S NUTSEDGE TAKING OVER.

Those bright yellow-green shoots sticking above your lawn? The picture shows yellow nutsedge—and mowing it down doesn’t solve the problem.

Left untreated, it can multiply underground and spread. A few shoots can become a much bigger headache.

Many lawn care companies don’t include nutsedge control in their fall application. Gro Lawn does.

Our fall application includes control for both yellow and purple nutsedge, along with our seasonal lawn treatments.

Don’t let it keep gaining ground.
