Organ Fact of the Day: A pipe organ can “remember” sounds long before electronics ever got involved.
Many organs use stops, which control different ranks of pipes. Pulling a stop lets air into a specific set of pipes, each with its own tone color: flutes, strings, reeds, principals, and more. By combining stops, an organist can create an enormous range of sounds, from a soft whisper to a full-room thunderclap.
That’s why the pipe organ is often called “the king of instruments.” It isn’t just loud. It’s an entire orchestra operated by one very busy human with two hands, two feet, and apparently a heroic tolerance for buttons!
