When a family of skunks has been stuck in a window well for several days and mom's condition is questionable... you know that I'm going to climb down in there and pull them all out! Mom and her 7 kits had been there for awhile, but she was able to keep her kits alive with her own milk. She worked hard to dig under the window well and tunnel out and up to the surface, but she had only made it about halfway so far. It's doubtful she would have made it all the way out on her own, as every day she would get more dehydrated and exhausted.
Thankfully, the family called Orion Wildlife Solutions, who called us! Orion works to be a humane wildlife control operator, meaning they push for education and humane exclusion over lethal options, which we love to hear! Orion recognized that simply placing a board to allow the family to climb out might not be the best idea if mom's health was questionable. They provided the support and approached the kits from above (and were ready to film me getting sprayed if it happened 🤣) while I climbed down and worked to get them out of the tunnel from below.
All 7 kits and mom were recovered, given subcutaneous fluids, and are currently enjoying a good meal and relaxing stay in one of our condos. They will stay and build up some strength and hydration for a few days (and mom will get vaccinated) before being released back to their home region.
