Great to see the Aberdeen Bike Park Project getting attention!

Benchmark Trails was fortunate to help the Leadership Aberdeen class early on with bike park concepts and guidance as they worked to bring this vision to life. It’s exciting to see local partners, engineers, and community leaders rally around a project that can create more outdoor recreation opportunities for Aberdeen.

The project is now working toward funding for a future concrete pump track, where Benchmark Tracks is focused on bringing communities a real, durable, 8-foot-wide precast concrete pump track system built for quality, consistency, and northern climates.

Proud to have played a small part in helping move this idea forward.

The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is seeking public comment on a proposed Section 4(f) de minimis impact determination related to the temporary closure of a segment of the Racetrack Trail in Meade County. The temporary trail closure is associated with planned improvements to Interstate 90 from exit 32 to west of exit 37. Construction activities include pavement replacement, drainage structure improvements, and reconstruction of the exit 34 interchange.

The affected trail segment extends from the Rapid City, Pierre, & Eastern Railroad crossing to its connection with the Centennial Trail. The closure is expected to last approximately one year, after which the trail will be restored to its original condition. The temporary closure will not adversely affect the activities, features or attributes that qualify Racetrack Trail for protection under Section 4(f).

FHWA intends to make a Section 4(f) de minimis impact determination based on coordination with the BLM and the limited duration and nature of the closure.

The public is invited to review and comment on the proposed impact determination at www.i90exit32to40project.com.

Written comments may also be submitted to Andrea Bierle, SDDOT Environmental Engineer, by mail at 700 E. Broadway Ave., Pierre, SD 57501 or via email to [email protected]. For further information, please call 605-773-3180.

The public comment period is open through Friday, June 12, 2026.

Such an incredible day.

Last year, I dreamed up a big, hairy idea — a 100–150 mile long-distance singletrack route following the Missouri River through Central South Dakota.

A trail connecting Oacoma to Fort Pierre, running through the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation, supporting hiking, biking, horseback riding, and tying into an established Missouri River water trail. A true multi-day adventure corridor.

Something that could create real economic impact for rural communities.
Something that could shine a light on Indigenous culture and history.
Something that could bring people a little closer together through shared experience on the land.

Today was the first official feasibility study meeting — funded by a federal grant.

It’s still years away from reality.
But today, it became real.

Grateful. Fired up. And stoked for what’s ahead for South Dakota and trails. 🤙
