Don't wait for a hurricane warning to prepare your yard.

Southwest Florida's storm season is here, and the best time to protect your landscape is before the forecast gets serious.

Prepare now:
• Have large trees professionally inspected and properly pruned
• Remove dead, damaged, or overhanging limbs
• Check trees for signs of decay
• Make sure your yard drains properly

Before a storm:
• Bring in outdoor furniture and loose items
• Clear gutters and drains
• Turn off irrigation

One important reminder: Don't over-prune or "hurricane cut" your trees and palms. Proper structure matters when strong winds arrive.

That adorable little shrub at the nursery? Give it two years, and it's swallowing your window.

It's the most common design mistake we see, and it comes from one simple thing: planning around the plant in the pot instead of the plant it becomes. In South Florida, that happens fast: shrubs double in size, hedges fill in aggressively, and suddenly you're shearing everything every few weeks just to see out your windows.

Plant too close and you also get:
• Blocked windows and less natural light
• Moisture trapped against your siding
• More pests, because air can't circulate
• A lifetime of corrective pruning

The fix is spacing for the mature size from the start. Keep smaller shrubs about 3 feet off the house, 5 feet for anything that'll reach 6 feet or taller, and space plants so they just touch when fully grown, not on planting day.

It looks a little sparse at first. In a year, it looks intentional. That's the difference professional design makes.

That brown patch in your lawn might not be what you think

Many Florida homeowners assume every brown spot has the same cause, but two common lawn problems can look almost identical while requiring completely different treatments.

Here's how to spot the difference:

Large Patch Fungus
• Usually forms round or ring-shaped patches
• Common in shady, damp areas
• Grass blades pull away easily near the base

Chinch Bugs
• Create irregular patches that continue to spread
• Most common in hot, sunny areas
• Damage often appears during Florida's warmest months

Using the wrong treatment won't solve the problem; it can waste both time and money while your lawn continues to decline.

Quick Tip: Water the affected area and check it after a couple of days. If the grass doesn't recover, it may be time to investigate further.
