An impact-rated shingle's package carries two ratings, its impact class and its wind rating. Each comes from its own test, so a new Port Charlotte roof calls for a shingle strong on both. Impact rated alone could mean any of four classes, and only the top class takes the largest steel ball from 20 feet. Our latest article explains what the top impact class means and how the seal strips and starter course carry the wind number. Call PRG Roofing & Construction Inc. at (239) 237-2906 to talk through your next roof.

Turn over a bundle of storm-season shingles, and the wrapper carries two printed ratings, one for impact and one for wind. Impact and wind are measured by two s

Why Do Gutters Overflow?

๐Ÿ’ฆ If water pours over the edge of your gutters during heavy rain, does that automatically mean you need bigger gutters?

No.

There are several possible reasons a gutter can overflow.

๐Ÿ‚ Debris may be restricting water flow.
๐Ÿ’ง A downspout or outlet may be obstructed.
๐Ÿ“ The gutter pitch may not be directing water correctly.
๐Ÿ  Too much roof area may be draining into one section.
โฌ‡๏ธ The existing outlets or downspouts may not be moving water away effectively.

That's why we don't think of overflowing gutters as simply a gutter problem.
It's a water-management problem.

Follow the water:
Roof โ†’ Gutter โ†’ Downspout โ†’ Discharge

Every part of that path matters.

If your gutters struggle every time Southwest Florida gets a heavy downpour, don't just ask, โ€œDo I need bigger gutters?โ€

Ask:
โ€œWhy isn't the water moving where it's supposed to go?โ€

Is Your Gutter System Ready for Heavy Florida Rain?

๐ŸŒง๏ธ We tend to notice our gutters only when they're NOT doing their job.

And by then, water may already be pouring over the edge.

Your gutters have a deceptively simple job: collect the water coming off the roof and move it away from the home.

But doing that effectively involves an entire system.

๐Ÿ  Roof runoff
โžก๏ธ Gutters
โžก๏ธ Outlets
โžก๏ธ Downspouts
โžก๏ธ Discharge

If one part isn't working properly, the entire drainage path can be affected.

Overflowing gutters, standing water, sagging sections or water discharging in the wrong location are all worth investigating โ€” particularly before periods of heavy Southwest Florida rainfall.

And the solution isn't always simply installing a bigger gutter.

First understand where the water is coming from and where it's going.

That's how PRG approaches gutter and roof-drainage problems.

Look Beyond the Shingles

๐Ÿ‘€ There's a lot happening underneath your roof that you'll probably never see again once the job is finished.

That's why documentation during a roofing project can be so valuable.

Before the final shingles, tile or metal go down, portions of the roofing assembly are visible โ€” including decking conditions, underlayment and certain attachment or installation details.

Once the finished roof covering is installed, much of that work disappears from view.

๐Ÿ“ธ Photographing the roofing process helps create a record of what was actually done.

That's useful for the homeowner today and potentially valuable information to have available in the future.

At PRG Roofing & Construction, we believe homeowners should understand that the roof isn't just the surface you see from the street.

It's a complete system.

And when you're learning about wind mitigation, those details matter.

๐Ÿ  You replaced your roof. Does that automatically mean you'll receive additional wind-mitigation credits?

Not necessarily.

A new roof and a wind-mitigation evaluation are related, but they aren't the same thing.

Wind mitigation looks at specific documented features of the home and roofing system. Some may be affected during a roof replacement. Others involve parts of the structure that aren't changed simply because new shingles, tile or metal were installed.

That's why PRG encourages homeowners to think beyond the finished surface.

๐Ÿ”Ž What's underneath it?
๐Ÿ”จ How is the system installed?
๐Ÿ“ธ What was documented during construction?
๐Ÿก What other structural features are present?

And remember: insurance companies determine available credits, eligibility and premium effects based on the property, policy and their underwriting requirements.

A new roof is important.

Understanding the system underneath it is even better.

What Actually Matters in Wind Mitigation?

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Wind mitigation is about more than the material you see on top of your roof.

When most homeowners think about their roof, they think shingles, tile or metal.

But wind mitigation can involve features that aren't nearly as obvious from the street.

How is the roof deck attached?
What type of roof-to-wall connection is present?
What type of underlayment or secondary water-resistance feature is documented?
What is the roof geometry?
What opening-protection features are present?

๐Ÿ  That's why understanding a home's wind-mitigation features requires looking beyond the finished roof covering.

And there's another important distinction:

A roofing contractor can explain the roofing system and document the work performed. Your insurance carrier determines what credits, eligibility or premium changes may apply to your particular policy.

Don't start with, โ€œHow much will this save me?โ€

Start with, โ€œWhat does my home actually have?โ€

That's a much better question.

๐Ÿ“ธ After a storm, what you can document may be almost as important as what you can see.

Roof damage isn't always obvious from the driveway.

Some conditions may involve flashing, penetrations, roofing materials, transitions or areas that are difficult for a homeowner to see safely from the ground.

That's one reason PRG believes strongly in documenting roofing conditions.

A professional roof assessment can create a visual record of what was found and help answer some very important questions:

๐Ÿ”น Where is the damage?
๐Ÿ”น What roofing components are involved?
๐Ÿ”น Is there evidence of water intrusion?
๐Ÿ”น Is temporary protection necessary?
๐Ÿ”น What roofing work may be needed?

Good documentation doesn't determine whether something is covered by insurance โ€” that's an insurance decision.

What it does is help establish a clearer picture of the physical condition of the roof.
And when you're making decisions about your home after a storm, clarity matters.

What Should You Do After Storm Damage?

๐ŸŒช๏ธ A storm just came through. You see something wrong with your roof. What should you do next?

The first instinct may be to start worrying about insurance, estimates and how much this is all going to cost.

But there's a more useful place to start:
Understand what actually happened to the roof.

Was roofing material lifted or displaced? Is flashing damaged? Is water getting into the home? Is temporary protection needed? And is the problem isolated to one area or part of something larger?

๐Ÿ“ธ Good documentation matters. Photos of the roof's condition can help create a clearer record of what was found and what roofing work may be necessary.
PRG Roofing & Construction focuses on the part we're qualified to handle: the roof itself.

We inspect it. We document the conditions. We explain what we find. And when roofing work is needed, we can provide a clear scope for addressing it.

Your insurance company or other appropriately licensed insurance professional handles questions about your policy and coverage.

๐Ÿ  Understand the damage first. Then you can make better decisions about what comes next.

Rain is dripping into the living room and there are three things to do before anyone rebuilds. Cover the opening with whatever suits your roof, photograph the damage before a repair hides it, and meter the wood before anyone builds over it. That's how we run storm work at PRG Roofing & Construction Inc. in Fort Myers, and we explain in our latest article why the deck reading comes before the permanent repair every time. Call (239) 237-2906 if it's leaking now.

In the first two days after wind damage, the leak gets stopped, the roof gets photographed before a repair covers what the wind did, and the decking gets metered before a sheet goes back over it. P...

There's a photo of your roof that only exists if somebody takes it before the storm, and it's the one that matters most afterward. Our preseason visits produce that set, along with the handful of perimeter repairs a storm would otherwise find for you. We do both at PRG Roofing & Construction Inc. on a single free appointment at Fort Myers homes. Why the corners and edges get the attention is in our latest article. Call (239) 237-2906.

A preseason inspection helps fast in two ways, with the small fixes found at the corners and edges and a dated set of photos of the roof taken before anything happens to it.
