🐢 Even if our clients have shells, they still deserve a well-designed place to call home.

The team at AJO, led by Rory, designed the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Building for the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife CROW - Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island with Owen-Ames-Kimball Co. bringing the project to life through construction.

Dedicated to helping sick and injured sea turtles recover, this specialized facility was designed to support CROW’s incredible team in providing the care these animals need. With a focus on animal welfare, functionality, and resilience, the building provides a durable, thoughtfully designed environment where rehabilitation can happen safely and efficiently.

Because whether our clients have two legs, four legs, or flippers, we believe thoughtful design can make a difference. 💚

The full reveal:

The client’s beautiful plot of land nestled on the north shore of Sanibel created a unique opportunity for AJO. Despite less strict flood guidelines on the bay side of Sanibel, the client was determined to make their home resilient to the island’s unpredictable tropical climate. This meant the living spaces in the home must be lifted above the flood plane, while the garage exists at ground level.

These desires informed the distinct split-level form of the home. Varied floor plates, segmented interior spaces, and sweeping views of the ocean all contribute to the emphasis of the client’s refined living experience in their home.

This home serves as a strong reminder that at AJO, each client’s unique wishes and lifestyle will always create a one-of-a-kind residence tailored to who they are.

A resilient home starts long before the walls go up. 🏗️

On this Sanibel Island beach front project, concrete piles are being driven deep into the ground to create a foundation designed to keep the home firmly rooted against the forces of future storms.

For our clients, building a custom home means trusting a team to think beyond how it will look: to understand how it will be built, how it will perform, and how it will protect what matters to them for years to come.

That’s why being in the field is such an important part of our practice. During this site visit, Marcey Williamson walked our architects-in-training, Reece Berry & matthew miller , through the pile-driving process in real time, connecting the details we draw with the way they’re actually constructed.

Every lesson we bring back from the field helps us make more informed decisions for our clients, creating homes that are not only beautiful and deeply personal, but thoughtfully designed for the realities of living in Southwest Florida.

A complete renovation involves thousands of decisions. They shouldn’t feel like thousands of disconnected decisions.

When interior architecture and interior design are considered together, every part of a space can work toward the same vision, from rethinking the layout and flow down to the cabinetry, lighting, finishes, storage, and hardware you interact with every day.

That’s the value of a turnkey design process. For this condo renovation, we worked with our clients to completely reimagine the existing space, carrying the design from the larger architectural decisions through the interiors and finishing details.

In the kitchen and wet bar, that meant more than selecting beautiful finishes. It meant thinking through how the spaces would actually be used, integrating appliances, creating concealed and accessible storage, coordinating lighting, and tailoring cabinetry around the clients’ daily routines.

One project. One cohesive vision. Thought through from the big picture to the smallest detail.

Designing for Fort Myers Beach means responding to a unique set of needs, from the realities of a coastal environment to the character of the community itself.

For Sanibel Captiva Community Bank’s new bank, one of the client’s priorities was creating a building that could be incredibly resilient while still feeling at home in its surroundings. Elevating the building helps respond to coastal conditions, but instead of allowing that necessity to define the architecture, it became an opportunity.

The building takes on the familiar scale and language of a coastal residence, using pitched roof forms, deep overhangs, balconies, landscaping, and an open ground level to create something that feels less like a traditional bank and more like a natural part of Fort Myers Beach.

It’s an example of how we approach our clients’ projects: understand what they need the building to accomplish, identify the opportunities within those constraints, and develop a solution specifically around them.

Because the goal isn’t simply to design a building that looks good, it’s to solve the right problems for the people who will use it.
