Grateful to AIA Florida for standing behind me before, during, and yes, now, after the election. Once a Florida architect, always a Florida architect, even from the national stage.

The legacy continues.

Congratulations to this year’s AIA Florida Gold Medal recipient, Debra Lupton, FAIA! At this year’s AIA Florida awards ceremony, Joyce, 2022 Gold Medal recipient, joined her peers in welcoming Debra to the group.

The Gold Medal is the highest award that AIA Florida can bestow on one of its members, and speaks to the individual’s noteworthy accomplishments, profound impact on the
profession, and a career over and above what is normally expected.

Congratulations, Debra, and thank you for all you have done for the Institute!

Southwest Florida is no stranger to illustrious architecture. In 1953, Sanibel Island became home to the Walker Guest House, designed by prolific 20th-century modernist Paul Rudolph.

Today, on the foundation of the greats in the past, AJO continues the region’s architectural excellence on Sanibel and beyond. Rudolph’s legacy continues to inspire our team to push the limits of design and create impactful spaces for all our clients. This model of the Walker Guest House displayed in the AJO office serves as a visual reminder of the giants on whose shoulders we stand.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition of our founder and principal, Joyce Owens, FAIA, RIBA.

Joyce has been honored with a Presidential Citation from AIA Florida in recognition of her courageous leadership, unwavering service, and dedication to advancing the architectural profession through her candidacy for The American Institute of Architects President.

Leadership is about more than designing buildings, it is about serving the profession, mentoring future architects, and helping shape the future of architecture. Joyce has exemplified those values throughout her career, and we are grateful to see her commitment recognized.

We are excited for the journey ahead and look forward to supporting Joyce as she continues to serve architects across not only Florida but, the nation.

Congratulations, Joyce! Your passion, vision, and leadership inspire all of us at AJO every day.

Great design starts with understanding the materials that shape it. During Marmomac Brazil, Cristina Reis Sauger had the opportunity to visit centrorochas gaining firsthand insight into the journey of natural stone, from its origin and processing to the craftsmanship behind every slab.

👀 Check out the full article in the latest Design + Decor Florida Edition, “Understanding Brazilian Stone: From Quarry to Kitchen & Bath”.

Experiences like these strengthen the way we approach material selection, allowing us to specify stone with greater confidence and intention. By understanding not only how a material looks, but how it’s sourced, crafted, and performs over time, we can better guide our clients toward selections that perfectly align with their vision, lifestyle, and expectations.

Because every exceptional project deserves materials chosen with purpose.

Every custom home begins with a conversation, not a template.

Our role is to listen, refine, and transform each client’s vision into architecture that is uniquely their own. From thoughtfully curated materials and seamless indoor-outdoor living to a hidden wine room designed just for the homeowner, every detail is carefully considered and crafted with intention.

The result isn’t just a beautiful home; it’s one that couldn’t belong to anyone else.

Our flag was still there 🇺🇸

Just as the Star-Spangled Banner stood strong, our buildings stand strong too. Resilient design is essential in Southwest Florida.

On this 250th Independence Day, we are reminded that strength, durability, and preparation matter. That’s why we build to withstand Florida’s powerful tropical climate.

Back to our regularly scheduled architecture content!

We promise we’ve been doing more than campaigning for the AIA presidency; the AJO team has been hard at work doing what we love most, designing meaningful places throughout Florida.

We’re excited to share that our Edison & Ford project is featured in the Summer edition of the AIA Florida / Caribbean Architect magazine in the “On the Boards” section! Swipe to see more.

“Soon after visiting Florida in 1885, inventor Thomas Edison decided to build a winter house along the Caloosahatchee River just southwest of downtown Fort Myers. In 1916, his friend Henry Ford bought the house next door. Both properties are now part of a non-profit institution with a 21-acre public campus that includes Edison’s rubber laboratory, botanic gardens and a museum devoted to the history and interpretation of the site.

The local firm Architecture Joyce Owens, LLC, has designed a new entry building near the existing museum to create a welcoming architectural gateway for visitors to the campus. The first new structure to be built as part of the institution’s current master plan, the two-story pavilion will contain reception and ticketing functions along with curatorial and administrative spaces. A long, wide canopy will extend from the main block of the building, shading the adjacent entry plaza and extending over two freestanding restrooms at the
opposite end. The design is notable for its modesty, deferring to the existing buildings on the site.”
