What Are Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)?
Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) are prefabricated building panels made of a rigid foam insulation core sandwiched between two structural facings, typically oriented strand board (OSB). SIPs serve as walls, roofs, and floors in a single component, combining structure, insulation, and air barrier into one factory-built system. Because the panels are manufactured off-site to precise specifications, SIP construction reduces on-site labor, framing lumber use, and air leakage compared to conventional stick-frame construction.

This SIP village includes 30 120-sq-ft. units that are both comfortable and energy efficient. These affordably designed tiny homes in Albuquerque received a lot of national attention and several other cities are mitigating homelessness with this same concept.

Enercept

The Tiny Homes were built by volunteers from the local carpenters union. Using SIPs was an easy, effective way to quickly build 30 housing units. The Tiny Homes are very tight and energy efficient.
