In light of recent posts concerning safe communication through the North Maine Woods, we figured it was time to correct some common misconceptions and solutions to ensure a safe 2026 Maine moose hunt:
1️⃣: MURS radios are the frequency of choice for the North Maine Woods
Throughout zones 1-10 primarily, a MURS radio will ensure safe travel via designated channels for your given road. One caveat would be the Greenville and Kokadjo area where CB radio has remained the frequency of choice for those landowners, although subject to change in the future. For many of my customers hunting in those areas, we've recommended equipping both types of radios in case they venture off into MURS territory.
2️⃣: It is important to talk, not just listen
We've heard it all too often: "I'm getting a MURS so I can listen when the trucks are coming." As with any form of communication, it's a two way street. If they don't know where you are, how do our hard working loggers know when to expect a hazard like an oncoming vehicle? When your location is properly transmitted, it ensures the opposing party is well informed and able to travel without fear of what's around the next corner; in turn keeping you much safer in the end. We train all new users the four main points to get across: mile marker, road name, vehicle type, and direction of travel.
3️⃣: Starlink is NOT a replacement for a quality MURS radio
There has been no bigger game changer for connectivity out on the road less traveled than Starlink. We use it everyday and have sold and installed countless units. This is a great addition to your hunt, but NOT a replacement for a MURS radio. Clear communication with opposing traffic is vital to a safe hunt.
4️⃣: Consider safety a long term investment, not an inconvenience
We get it: moose hunts are expensive. However, expensive too are visits to the ER for a fractured pelvis due to a head-on collision. We constantly hear from people who went the cheap route and bought that Baofeng off of Amazon thinking it would serve them for years to come. While some have had success, most wind up with improperly programmed units or fried motherboards over time due to their inherent low quality. It is important to do it right the first time, not twice.
