A beloved species in one place is a horrific problem in another!
Rhododendron species are loved (and cultivated) in and around our communities on the North Coast of California. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden is known for its prized rhododendron collection. However, in Ireland rhododendrons are one of the most invasive species. This plant has escaped from gardens and has spread (and in many cases overtaken) forests and the surrounding landscape.
When we help develop planting plans for restoration, this is something we take into consideration. While a certain species may be “pretty” or produce beautiful flowers, it is also important to think about the bigger picture. Will this species create an issue if it escapes? Will it outcompete other native species and what benefit will it provide for native insects and birds?
