✨ The 'Learn about the Laureate' series is back so that you can learn more about 2021 Washington Business Hall of Fame Laureate Craig Ruppert! Check out his Q&A with JA. 💬

JA: What was the hardest job you have ever done?

Ruppert: When I was 16 years old, I had a summer job where I was working for a highway contractor. My job was to jackhammer catch basins in the middle of the beltway around the Central Avenue exit. I had an air compressor and a jackhammer, and I had to stand up on top of these catch basins to break them up into pieces. Today they do it with equipment, but back then it was done by hand. The jackhammer weighed 80 pounds and it was really rattling to your body. Plus, it was really hot, and you’d have to wear gloves when using it or it would burn your hands. I enjoyed that kind of physical work. It was good, honest work and I liked the challenge of it, and it’s something I’ve never forgotten.

JA: If you were to create a slogan or theme song for your life, what would it be?

Ruppert: Life is short—enjoy the simple things.

JA: Did you have a teacher or educator over the course of your schooling who had a lasting impact on your life?

Ruppert: I had a finance teacher, Samuel Hayes, at Harvard Business School where I attended an executive leadership program. He had the ability to take very complex concepts and simplify them so that they became understandable. I’d failed to fully comprehend the concept of a balance sheet and he was able to help me understand that in a way that made sense to me.

Speaker Pelosi remarks at the "In America: Remember" Congressional Remembrance Ceremony

Thank you to Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the kind words of recognition at the In America Flags Congressional Remembrance Ceremony earlier this week. The artist behind this exhibit, Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, invited Craig Ruppert to attend this small ceremony on behalf of Ruppert Landscape and the many team members who worked tirelessly over the three-day installation to help plant 660,000+ flags on the National Mall in memory of COVID-19 victims. While the recognition is certainly appreciated, the true reward for all our team's hard work is seeing the impact this exhibit has had on so many and hearing how it has helped them process the grief of losing their loved ones. We are honored to have played a small part in that.

"In America: Remember" COVID Memorial Flag Installation on the National Mall

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the installation of 660,000+ flags on 20 acres of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as part of "In America: Remember," an art installation by Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg commemorating the many Americans who have lost their lives to COVID-19. In this video, we hear from Craig Ruppert, Suzanne (the artist), and others who were intimately involved in organizing the installation, which took 300+ Ruppert team members (alongside community volunteers) approx. 2,000 hours during the course of three days. https://youtu.be/l0DljC1dTok

Since this exhibit opened to the public late last week, we have heard from so many people just how much it means to them for their departed loved ones to be memorialized in this way. One person wrote in to the In America Flags website saying, "Words cannot describe how much the display means to us. This project has touched my soul. For the first time since his death it feels like he has been 'seen.' I'm not sure if that makes sense but it helps so much. The enormity of the display is a heartbreaking, powerful statement. I can't imagine how hard you and all of the volunteers have worked to help make this happen...You have my deepest gratitude. Your efforts mean so much to so many."

We want to thank Suzanne for getting us involved in this extraordinary project, and we especially want to thank every single team member who helped bring this project to fruition. We could not have done this without you, and we hope you know how much your efforts are appreciated.

With Monuments, Memorials, U.S. Mourns Locally for COVID-19

"Local COVID-19 memorials have been operating on an adjusted scale, struggling to fully capture the full number of deaths. In Washington D.C., artist Suzanne Firstenberg wanted to create an installation that would allow visitors to visualize the full toll of the pandemic. Last fall, she placed 267,080 white flags outside of RFK Stadium to mark the number of deaths at the time. A year later, she is working to make a second installation that will reflect a death toll that has more than doubled and encourage visitors to personalize the flags with the names of their loved ones.

'Encountering a personalized one and then lifting one’s gaze across this immense field…I think that will help people understand the magnitude of our loss on both an individual basis and on a national basis,' says Firstenberg."

Read more about this impactful exhibit, for which we are honored to have helped with the installation, in TIME magazine:
