DAVIS TREE CARE INC. IS NOW STERLING TREE SOLUTIONS
As of May 1st, 2015, one of Chicago’s oldest and most respected arboricultural firms, Davis Tree Care Inc. of Forest Park, IL, combined with Sterling Tree Solutions (STS) to create the Midwest’s most innovative and forward-thinking arboricultural and resource management enterprise. Collectively these two companies are able to draw on over 100 years of tree care and lumber production experience, reflecting Sterling’s ability to harvest, mill, and transport lumber nationally since 1949, and the establishment of Davis Tree Care, Inc. in 1955.
Sterling Tree Solutions’ approach to the integration of urban tree care, urban timber upcycling, and forest management is truly unique and multi-faceted. STS offers a wide range of cultural treatments to keep trees healthy and productive, ensuring the full range of environmental and aesthetic benefits they provide. Treatments include pruning, fertilization, the application of pesticides to combat disease and insect pests, storm damage mitigation, and cable and brace rod installation. STS has the expertise to apply these treatments at the single tree level in a residential setting, or at a much higher level in the municipal, park, or commercial environment. It is when tree removal does become necessary whether due to disease, insect infestation, storm damage, or hazardous condition that the STS approach differs from traditional tree care providers.
Sterling Tree Solutions (STS) emphasizes “upcycling” urban timber, utilizing a resource often thought of as disposable or of little worth in order to make something of greater use and value. Urban timber begins as from logs produced from tree care and removal procedures whether from private residences, municipalities, forest preserves and park districts, commercial properties, or land clearing operations such as highway and utility improvements. Until now, the vast majority of this material was processed into mulch and firewood. While these practices are considered recycling and do provide a degree of positive environmental return, upcycling material into durable and long-lived products offers a far greater return. Urban timber harvested through STS operations is processed locally at our sawmill in Phoenix, IL in the manufacture of a variety of lumber products. Sterling is a premier provider of crane and access matting to the construction industry and others, allowing heavy equipment to safely move and work in environmentally sensitive areas. Sterling supplies matting for projects such as wind farms, transmission lines, and more general civil construction. Use of urban timber eliminates an equal amount of demand for fiber from traditional forestry suppliers. Supplementing forest grown timber with timber from a local, urban source also sequesters carbon by allowing forest trees to stand. Additionally, upcycling reduces transportation costs, fuel consumption, and emissions, fully closing the environmental benefits loop.
While there is a new name and logo over the door, key elements of Davis Tree Care, Inc. have been retained in the Sterling Tree Solutions organization. Bobby Davis, well known for many years as President of Davis Tree Care, is still in charge of day-today operations as General Manager of Operations at STS. The office, yard, and shop complex are still located in Forest Park as they always have been, and the familiar phone number of 708.771.8500 remains unchanged. As part of the union of the two companies, additional experienced crewmembers have been brought on to supplement long-time Davis employees in the field. New, larger capacity equipment has been added to the existing fleet to handle an increased workload. Sales, promotional, and office staff have also been added to manage growth while still providing the same neighborhood character and responsiveness Davis Tree Care clients have become accustomed to over the last fifty-plus years. Together, these arboricultural professionals and qualified, knowledgeable field employees bring decades of municipal and private sector management and field experience to STS.
