🔥 Last week, we shared how proper building practices helped keep a garage fire from spreading. This week, we’re talking about how that fire started—and how we can help prevent the next one. The fire was traced back to the use of a faulty charger, making this year’s Fire Prevention Week message, “Charge into Fire Safety,” especially meaningful.
Garages are often home to rechargeable tools, lawn equipment, scooters, battery charging stations and more. We visited the Forest City Fire Department & spoke with the fire chief to discuss why it’s important to use the correct charger designed for your device or battery, follow manufacturer instructions and pay attention to where and how items are being charged.
🔋 Use the correct, manufacturer-approved charger
🔌 Inspect chargers, cords and batteries for damage
🔥 Keep charging equipment away from combustible materials
⚠️ Stop using batteries or chargers that are damaged, unusually hot, swollen or otherwise showing signs of a problem
Fire safety isn’t only about how we build—it’s also about how we use our homes every day.
