These are just a few of the deck transformations we’ve completed recently, and there’s one thing I’ve noticed on almost every project…

The biggest problem isn’t the stain or the paint, it’s the prep.

Too many decks fail because they’re stained or painted before they’re properly prepped. Every deck is different, but proper prep can include pressure washing, scraping failing coatings, sanding, and allowing the wood to dry before applying a finish. Even the weather plays a huge role in whether a coating succeeds or fails.

A shortcut during prep can cost you the entire job. We’ve seen decks begin peeling and failing in less than a year simply because the prep wasn’t done correctly.

Whether you’re hiring a contractor or doing it yourself, don’t underestimate the importance of preparation.

It’s the prep work that makes the difference: protecting the areas that shouldn’t be painted, pole sanding the walls, filling nail holes, repairing scratches and dents, and taking the time to do things the right way so the finish lasts.
