True confession: I am addicted to Native Texas plants. I have seen firsthand how the right native plants can bring your yard to life with butterflies, bees, and birds. I am 3 years into transforming my yard with Texas Natives and I'm excited to share what I've learned with you. You can support more insects and wildlife, one plant at a time. Let's work together to build back habitat in our part of Central Texas!

Dear Gardener—
The spring equinox marks a quiet but powerful turning point. Day and night meet in perfect balance as the afternoon light lengthens and lingers, as though it's as excited as we are to see what the season brings. Here in Central Texas, we felt the shift announce itself with a breeze and one last freeze. And now the sun warms the soil, and shoots break the surface, reminding us that growth is already underway. We step out into stronger sunshine, take a breath of fresh air, and get to work.

Upon returning to the garden, we're immediately reminded that each task is a powerful teacher. Take pruning, for example. Removing dead, damaged, and diseased growth that no longer serves a plant allows light and air to reach the center, reduces the risk of further problems, and helps the plant direct its energy into sturdy stems and abundant flowers or bigger fruit. It’s a simple practice with a powerful result: less waste, more vitality.

The same principle applies to our own lives. When we take time to cut away habits, distractions, or commitments that drain us, we create space for healthier growth — more creativity, more purpose, more JOY. Like our plants, we flourish when our energy is directed toward what truly sustains and strengthens us.

At Front Porch Flowers, we have set up new raised beds, applied compost to rejuvenate the soil, and transplanted Native Texas perennials. We are diligently recording what works and what doesn't. We follow the garden's guidance: the right inputs make abundance not only possible, but sustainable.

Though a meaningful marker of the seasons, the equinox doesn't seem to leap from modern calendars or capture popular attention the way official holidays do these days. As gardeners, however, we're primed to appreciate its significance—and as humans in a complex world, we'll lean into all the celebrating that we can. So do something special this weekend: sow some seeds, help a friend prep a bed for planting, or treat yourself to a beautiful planter full of spring flowers for your front porch. Direct your energy toward what sustains you, because in life as in the garden—with steady care, patience, and a little luck—what we focus on grows.
