Even though summer is winding down, it’s still best for those lawn care practices to continue!🌱
September is an ideal time to spend some extra time in your yard before the colder months come knocking.
For those with cool season lawns like Kentucky blue grass, tall fescue, and fine fescue, it’s even more so important to give it the care it needs to stay healthy come spring.
We’ve put together a few task items to ensure your precious turf continues to get the attention it deserves throughout the fall months!😊
🌱Aerating: For lawns that take a beating during the summer months, aeration is extremely important. September is the perfect month for aerating and can improve the air exchange between the soil and air, enhance fertilizer consumption, reduce water runoff, loosen compacted soil, increase heat stress tolerance, and develop resiliency.
🌱Fertilizing: September is also the ideal month for fertilizing. Cool season lawns need to be fertilized with a pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet. It’s best to do this both in September and again in November.
🌱Seed Planting: Do you notice any bare or thinning spots in your lawn? This is normal but it also needs to be addressed. September is the perfect month to plant new seeds in Michigan and it’s easy to do. Pluck weeds, prepare a proper bed, and then lay your seeds. For optimal results, cover your bare spots with a light mulch or straw so the ground remains moist until the grass is fully rooted.
🌱Over Seeding: To get thick and lush grass that’s vibrant, you’ll need to over seed your lawn in September. It will help to improve turf density, fill in bare spots, and enhance color.
