Can you insulate over old BX wiring? What about knob-and-tube?

I had a customer ask me this while we were looking at insulating their home through Mass Save.

In this video I show you both.

First, we have old BX/armored cable. Then we have old knob-and-tube wiring. They’re both older wiring methods, but they are NOT the same thing when it comes to insulating your home.

Active knob-and-tube is a major concern because it was designed to dissipate heat into the open air around it. Burying it in insulation can create a dangerous situation.

BX is different, but that doesn’t mean every piece of 70, 80 or 90-year-old BX should automatically be considered safe. The condition of the wiring, insulation, connections and any modifications made over the years all matter.

This is exactly why an electrical inspection before insulation is so important.

Don’t just cover up what’s inside those walls and ceilings. Know what you have first.

Lock Out Tag Out is not optional!!

This is what happens when a 50-amp, 3-pole breaker gets cooked.

We were working on a rooftop unit and found the breaker completely burned up.

In this video, I remove the damaged breaker, inspect the connections, and replace it with a new one.

The important part isn’t just replacing what burned up. It’s figuring out why it got hot in the first place. Loose or poor connections create resistance, and resistance creates heat. Eventually, you can end up with damage that looks like this.

Electrical and HVAC work go hand in hand.

The more rooftop units I work on, the more I realize how valuable it is to understand both sides of the equipment.

The existing service has seen better days. My recommendation is a new electrical panel, cleaning up the existing wiring, and installing a new 100-amp main breaker service with a new service mast through the roof.

Expansion fittings are designed to move.

This one moved a little too much. 😂

The utility pipe expanded enough that it pulled right out of the expansion fitting and cracked the PVC.

In this video I’ll show you what happened, why these fittings are installed in the first place, and what needs to be done to fix it properly.

I’m not gonna tell you how bad this is.

I’m not gonna tell you how scary this is.

I’m not gonna start talking about fire hazards.

I’m definitely not gonna start going through all those fuses and wondering whether they’re even the right size.

I’m not gonna tell you this panel should probably be upgraded.

And I’m certainly not gonna tell you that if this was in my house, I might have a hard time sleeping at night.
