Cherry will make you earn the finish.

It doesn’t always absorb stain evenly, so one section can look perfect while another turns dark and blotchy. Beadboard makes it harder because stain collects inside every groove.

Getting it right starts with even sanding and a test piece from the actual wood. If the cherry is taking color unevenly, a compatible conditioner helps control the absorption. From there, you work in sections, keep a wet edge, brush out the grooves, and wipe the excess before it starts setting.

Since this is a porch ceiling, the stain and clear coat also need to be made for exterior exposure. Real cherry will continue getting richer with age, and that’s part of what makes the extra work worth it.
