A burst pipe is loud and obvious. Water everywhere, fast, and you know instantly something is wrong.

The upside, strange as it sounds, is that you catch it right away.

A gutter packed with wet leaves has nowhere to send water, so it spills over the edge and runs straight down the siding. From there, it pools against the foundation, where it can find its way into the basement or crawl space. Clearing the troughs and confirming your downspouts carry water several feet away from the house saves you a much bigger problem this fall.
